Chapter 361
Jason’s POV
“Men with ambitions like Richard’s do not limit the scope of their desires,” the man said.
Moving from the door, I stepped toward the barred cell wall I shared with the man. “Who are you?”
He was sitting, but still gave something of a formal bow. “I am Warrick, Sir. I was once a servant of this house, many, many years ago. Before the time of the civil war. Before Richard destroyed all of those who knew the truth of his deeds and who might speak out against him.”
“Richard brought you down here? Because you knew too much?”
“No, he brought me here because he believed me to be mute,” Warrick said. “I pretended, after the attack by the rogues, when the true Alpha perished, and the little princess was lost. We had all seen the jealousy Richard had shown toward his brother, and the lack of remorse at the loss. At that time, I had been injured anyway, a knife wound at my throat. It didn’t take premonition for me to know I could use that to my advantage.”
“I don’t understand,” I said.
“Pretending to be mute saved my life because Richard believed I couldn’t talk. That I couldn’t tell anyone what we all knew he did.” Warrick hung his head a moment. “The other servants and guards who wouldn’t go along with it were not nearly so lucky. He had them all killed and blamed it on the rogues. I have no idea how much he paid to earn the loyalty to the guards who helped him. It must have been a hefty sum. Our true Alpha was well-liked by all. Except his brother.”
Takeovers of packs were violent, but the murder of innocents was extreme for any person who hoped to become the pack Alpha. Richard would have only succeeded, only kept pack loyalty, if he had fooled everyone.
Could Richard truly have been so bloodthirsty? So manipulative? So filled with hate?
Frowning, I couldn’t find it in myself to disbelieve what I was hearing. Instead, I was filled with fresh fear, knowing that Laila was out there, vulnerable and potentially susceptible to whatever lies Richard was filling her ears with.
“You are certain that Richard did all this?” I asked.
“The night the true Alpha was killed,” the servant said, “the palace had been left empty. No guards were on duty, all called away only after the true Alpha had his family had retired for the night. Only someone with power could have sent the guards away, and the only person who had that power, other than the true Alpha himself was his brother.”
It wouldn’t have taken much to convince me Richard could have done this. Every word Warrick said made me even more uneasy. 1 had to find a way out of here, to get to Laila, before it was too late.
Moving away from him, I went back to the door. Maybe breaking out was my only choice.
“Why tell me all this?” I asked.
“I’ve been quiet so long,” Warrick said. “Arranging for the killing of his brother was bad enough, but what came after, I could never forgive. He slaughtered so many innocent people, all for the sake of maintaining his lie. I don’t know who you are, or which pack you came from. But if there’s even a sliver of a chance you are here to stop him, I would risk telling you all. I’m aqid man now. I can’t walk. I can barely move. I have nothing more he could take for me, but what’s left of this pathetic life. He’s welcome to it.
“Whatever you do, you must be careful, though. He is ruthless. He will show no mercy.”
“I had hoped to find a cure for her, and instead, I have brought her straight into the lion’s den,” I grumbled to myself
“A cure for whom?” Warrick asked.
I glanced back at him. “Your lost princess isn’t gone. He’s here”

Warrick straightened. “Here? Out there? With him?”
“Yes.”
