The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 363

Chapter 363

Laila’s POV

I waited a moment, half expecting Richard to return through the door, but when he didn’t, I threw back the covers, hopped from the bed, and went to the chair. Leaning down, I collected the knapsack from underneath, and, not wanting to be seen, retreated into the bathroom to open it.

Door firmly closed behind me, I placed the knapsack on the sink and opened it. Peeking in, my breath caught as I spotted the book from the library about the rules of succession. A bookmark was inside, marking a page. Underneath that was an envelope. And beneath that, was a photo.

I’d seen this photo before in Delta’s room, of a set of parents with their baby. I recognized them now, as my father, my mother, and myself. Delta had removed it from its frame and tucked it into the knapsack.

My heart ached seeing the happy faces of my parents and myself. What a different kind of life I might have lived if I had stayed here, if my father hadn’t died, if my mother hadn’t been under so much stress. If we could have been a family.

Setting aside the picture for now, I grabbed the letter and carefully ripped open the top, pulling a folded up piece of paper from inside. Unfolding it, I saw it was a letter handwritten in hasty scrawl.

My darling daughter Laila,

If you are reading this, then things went as I feared and I am dead. I’m dearly sorry that I can’t be there for you now, but I hope I was able to die with you knowing the truth, that you are my daughter, and I love you.

For you are my daughter, Laila. I knew upon first seeing you. How I wish I could have approached you at the first moment, to hold you in my arms and enjoy our reunion! But to do that meant that I wouldn’t have been able to protect you properly.

Over the past years since your father’s death, I have been able to convince Richard that I was mad, but it has never been true. Even in my darkest moments of grief, I remembered all. Pretending was the only way I could be spared from Richard’s wrath. Without your father and without you, I was weak. I didn’t see the point in standing against him just to die.

Maybe I knew you were alive. Maybe I had convinced myself to survive just long enough to give you the tools you would need to

defeat him.

You are of superior Lycan blood. A true Alpha is within you, deep down.

The night of the attack, I gave you a small dose of wolfsbane to hide your Aycan traits and sent you into the forest with a paid. I trusted like a sister. I hope you can forgive me for this, but I knew no other way to keep you safe. Anyone would have been able to see your bloodline, and would have sent you back to Richard. He would have killed you outright.

I don’t know what happened to you after my dear maid stole you away into the night. When the dust settled, I learned that she had been killed. Your body was never recovered. I always hoped you might have lived. I am fitied with pride seeing you now. I can only guess at how much you suffered.

1 never stopped loving you. Every day, I prayed to the goddess that you were safe, that she was protecting you.

You have become a woman filled with the strength of your father, and I hope some of me lives on in you as well. I love you, darling. What you find in these pages, I hope brings you aid where I cannot.
