Chapter 365
Jason’s POV
Hearing all that Warrick had to say, and seeing no direct way out of this cell – yet, I explained all that had transpired to him.
The longer I was in the dungeon, the more I was able to see in the dim light, the more I could make out Warrick’s worried face in the dark.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that Richard ordered that fire. He probably paid the assassin that took that shot too. And if Delta is dead…” Warrick pressed his hand to his heart. “Rest in peace, Luna.”
I waited a moment, not wanting to be disrespectful before asking him to clarify, “Luna?”
“I’d heard she’d been keeping herself safe by pretending to be mad. Rumors reached even here that she’d convinced Richard. We all did things to survive his rule. She deserved better truly, but likely she died saving the princess, which I hope brings her comfort in death.”
Warrick lifted his head, looking at me directly once more. “But this doesn’t bode well for Laila. With you here, and with Delta no longer able to protect her.”
I growled as I returned to the door. Gripping it with both hands, I started to push. The metal creaked.
“Not there,” Warrick said. “They replaced the doors a few years back. But they didn’t replace all the bars, just the doors. Touch these bars here, along the edge. They’ll be rusty, but weaker.”
Destroying the thick, new door would draw more attention than I wanted.
I moved to where he directed and grabbed the bars. Yes, they were rustier, more malleable, ready to crack. Escaping wouldn’t be quiet, but I wouldn’t have to draw so much strength. It shouldn’t be so loud. Maybe I could even get out of here without drawing
too much attention.
“I have one last warning,” Warrick said. “Escaping from here will be directly breaking an order from Richard, who is still parading as the Alpha. The people will follow him and his lies. He will paint you as the enemy. He might even try to lead his pack against yours in a war.”
I didn’t want to drag my pack into a war, but… “I will do anything to ensure the safety of my family.”
Growling, I gripped the bars and pushed. They whined but quickly cracked, giving way under my strength. I bent them forward, pushing a hole wide enough for me to escape.
Glancing back, I told Warrick, “You could come with me.”
“I can’t run. I will only slow you down,” he said. “Save our princess. That will be enough for me.”
With one final look, I nodded, then turned toward the bars and shoved through.
“Don’t look back,” Warrick said. “Leave this whole place behind.”
Iran.
Laila’s POV
“I’m not injured,” I said to Richard who loomed over me in the doorway. “I don’t need to be here anymore.”
“Good,” Richard said. “Because your new room is waiting for you in the palace.”
“But the fire-”
“Was in the guest wing,” Richard said. “From now on, you will be staying in the other side of the palace, intended for the Alpha and his relatives. You will be near me, Laila, and because of that, you will be safe.”
