Chapter 366

He glared at me. “Do not ask me that agairt.”

Then, he grabbed my arm, gripping me tightly, and turning it to the hallway, pulled me behind him, forcing me to follow.

“I can walk on my own,” I told him, and as the fear rose up in my throat, it was becoming more difficult to keep my voice level.

“I don’t care,” he said. “You keep pushing me, keep trying me, like a toddler. If you want to act like a child, then you will be treated like one.”

My natural instinct was to fight against him. Even my wolf, tired as it was, was rousing again. But if all he wanted to do was show me my new room, was that really something worth fighting over?

If that was where we were really going…

He dragged me out from the medical building and across the concourse to the palace itself. The outside area was noisy with the sounds of construction, the guest wing likely being rebuilt. But the scent of smoke still wafted in the air. I wondered if I would always smell it here.

Any servants we passed, quickly diverted their gazes down and away from us. The guards just kept looking forward, giving us a wide berth.

When we entered the palace, I thought Richard would take me upstairs to where I was sure the bedrooms are, instead, he started to lead me to a stairwell that only went down.

My bad feelings amplified. My wolf started pacing in my mind.

Downstairs would be a basement. No windows. No exits.

No witnesses.

I could do this. I couldn’t be here with him. He wasn’t trying to help me. He wanted to… Gods, what if he was trying to kill me? To keep the rule for himself?

He could have it! I didn’t want it! I’d only ever wanted the cure.

I had to get away. I couldn’t let this happen.

In my chest, the bond I shared with Jason started to stir.

He was moving. Coming closer. Pulling at our bond just as I was to find his way to me.

Finding courage in strength in that, I allowed my wolf strength out just enough to break free from Richard’s hold. He hadn’t been expecting me to fight back, not after I’d been submissive all this time.

“What are you doing?” he cried out. “Get back here! Laila!”

I didn’t listen. I just ran, back the way we had come, out the door. In the courtyard, I saw Jason running toward me. I picked up speed, running as fast as I could toward him as well.

We crashed into each other, our arms flying around each other, holding on, holding close. I was breathing too heavy to speak

“I’ve got you,” Jason promised. “I’m here.”

Richard’s POV

I reached the door to the concourse, already knowing what I would see

That bastard Jason had escaped my dungeon, ruining all my plans once again. All I had to do was drag her to that basement and i would have been done with her myself. I was tired of leaving this job to others. To chance.

I had always depended on fryself to see things done. And away from the eyes of those disloyal to me, no one would have stopped

Jason’s return threw a wrench into those plans. He was too strong to face head on.
