The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 367

Chapter 367

Laila’s POV

Jason and I, wrapped up in each other, were lost to the rest of the world for a long moment. All of the fear and worry that had been accumulating inside of me since the fire was slowly seeping away as I found new comfort in Jason’s presence. He was here

now. I wasn’t alone.

“Were you really in a cell?” I whispered.

“Yes, but we will talk of that later,” he said. “How are you? Did he hurt you?”

“I’m not hurt,” I told him. “I’m okay.”

He combed his fingers through my hair. With my face against his chest, he placed his chin on the top of my head. Closing my eyes, I breathed him in, his scent, his presence. This soothed things inside of myself that I hadn’t even realized had been tense and unhappy.

However, Jason and I both tensed again as Richard stepped closer to us.

“What is the meaning of this?” he demanded.

Jason and I released each other, I thought to face Richard together. Instead, Jason stepped ahead of me protectively, facing Richard with me slightly behind him.

“Nothing will keep me from my mate,” Jason said. “Not steel bars. Not a dungeon. Nothing.”

Richard narrowed his eyes. “You have broken my rules, likely damaged my dungeon, and now you endanger all of us. You were in that cell for a reason, Alpha Jason. You endangered my people during the fire.”

I couldn’t hold my tongue anymore. “Your people shot and killed my mother.”

and they killed her for it.”

“They were trying to protect you, Laila. They thought she was trying to kidnap you.” I didn’t believe that for a second. “She pulled me from the fire. She saved me,

“It was an unfortunate misunderstanding,” Richard said, frowning.

“Then so was what happened with Jason,” I pressed. “Tensions were high that day. If those guards are not to be punished, then neither should Jason. He also thought he was protecting me.”

Richard glared at me for a long moment – so long, that I thought he was going to simply tell me no and have us both hauled off to a dungeon cell.

“Your mate is a dangerous person, niece. He cannot be trusted.”

“I trust Jason with my life,” I said.

Jason stood slightly taller. Richard looked at him, and light growls emerged from them both. This was something of a standoff, two angry Alphas, positioning themselves as if to fight.

I held my breath, worried one of them might initiate a challenge. A challenge was a fight to death or surrender, and could have both of their packs on the line, the victor’s prize.

Jason wouldn’t chance it, surely And Richard was a calculating sort. As angry as he was with Jason, he wouldn’t risk his own neck, his own pack, just to get rid of Jason himself… right?

I wasn’t sure, and the longer the growling persisted, the more uncertain I was. Knowing I had to intervene before thus became something worse, I rushed forward, stepping around Jason to move into the space between the two angry Alphas,

“Uncle, Jason means only to keep me safe,” I said. “I insist he stay at my side now

“I’m not going anywhere else,” Jason added.

Richard looked from Jason to me. “You are certain about this?”

“Yes,” I said quickly and firmly. Without question.”
