Laila’s POV

Richard was a liar. There was no reason to believe he would tell me the truth of what occurred, but I couldn’t deny the temptation. Truly, I wanted to know what befell my father the night of the rogue attack, and no one would know better now than my uncle, since the servants had been ostracized and my mother recently killed.

So I lifted my hand and placed in it Richard’s outstretched one, accepting his dance.

“Laila,” Jason said, stilted, like he wanted to stop me.

“I’ll be fine,” I told him.

Richard gave a sharp grin. “It’s not like I’m going to kill her in the middle of the ballroom.”

That comment did nothing for my nerves, which flared with the words. I knew he wanted me dead, and he must have known that I knew, for him to be so flippant about it. He was overconfident, then.

We needed to take him down as soon as possible.

“Harm her and I will tear your head off,” Jason growled.

Richard’s smile wavered for a moment, and just for an instant, I saw a flash of fear in his eyes. It dimmed quickly, though, as he recovered. His hand closed around mine, tight enough to hurt.

“Alpha Jason, you’ve just about worn out your welcome around here.”

“I don’t anticipate staying in your company for much longer,” Jason replied.

Richard narrowed his eyes. “Good. You should get back to your pack. Though I’m sure they run fine without your interference.”

Turning then, Richard dragged me out onto the open floor which must have been meant for dancing. No one else was dancing yet, despite the upbeat music clearly intended for such a purpose. They must have been waiting for Richard to make the first move, because as he and I started to dance, the others moved onto the floor around us, couples beginning their own swaying movements.
