Laila’s POV

Richard’s loud clapping silenced the whispers. Even the Council stopped reading the evidence to consider him, as he closed the distance, coming to the base of the stairs

“A fine act, Laila, but this is no time for games.” He turned away from the stage, facing the faceless crowd. Waving his arms wide, he announced, “My people! I’m very sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but our beloved princess has come to us broken.” He gestured toward his head. “Her mind is unwelk I fear she has been claimed by the same madness that affected her mother in the end.”

“That’s ridiculous,” I snapped. “If that were true, where would I have obtained these documents?”

“Forgeries, all,” Richard said. “She will do anything to maintain her delusion.”

“I am not deluded,” I said. “He is lying. He has tried to kill me several times, and he will continue to do so until he succeeds. But he will never succeed.”

At the base of the stage, Richard’s face turned pale. “Another forgery!” he declared.

This time, one of the Elders answered for me. “A book, Richard? Is she a bookmaker now too? And a skilled enough one to make the book appear dated? And with the same cover as the other texts from this time, from our founders?”

Another Elder took the book from me and a few read the tome more carefully.

“Do not entertain this!” Richard demanded. “She is a liar! I was the true heir! I am the rightful Alpha!”
