As I’m mingling alongside my mother, being introduced to person after person I couldn’t help myself. I had to eye this woman I can very clearly tell is Hunter’s mate.

She’s cute, I guess. A little shorter than he is, blonde hair that’s in an updo so I can’t tell how long it is, but I would guess a little longer than her shoulders, she’s a slender build, and is wearing a bit more make up than I have a taste for.

I can see happiness in Hunter’s eyes though. He clearly is head over heels immediately. I couldn’t help but be jealous. Not of her, but of them. I know my mate is here somewhere, but I haven’t met him yet. I could feel his presence. I’m not sure how Hunter knew this woman was his mate right away with all these people here.

I began to wonder if I’ve already seen my mate and I just didn’t know it was him. Everyone I know says it’s clear as day when you see them, but it seems odd to me that I can feel him around me, but

I haven’t seen him.

After a few hours of my mother introducing me to more people than I have ever met before, I gave up trying to remember names. The names were blurring together from person to person. As we began to finally make our way over to Hunter, I felt this irresistible pull to go the other way.

“Mother.” I said as I placed my hand on her arm, “I am going to go get a drink. I’ll be back.” Before she could say anything to stop me from leaving her side I quickly turned and walked away through a crowd of people.

I made my way back to where I began the party. The tree line, overlooking the party and the large group of guests all around. There was a band playing lightly in the background and a few different tables of food and drinks scattered all around the gathering area. Thankfully, the Alpha games had been hosted here frequently back when they used to make everyone fight everyone. The pack had built a great large place for big groups of people to gather here.

I started to feel like I was being weird, just standing here looking over everyone and everything. I gave up on this pull I felt to go this way and started walking away.

“You must be Kira.” I heard a deep voice say.

Instantly my wolf began going crazy and though every part of me wanted to turn and look at this man my body wouldn’t move. I completely froze from my nerves.

I must have looked like such a fool just standing there completely still, not answering this man.

I heard him walking up beside me, but his scent filled me long before that. He smelt like fresh rainfall and huckleberries. Of course, my mate would smell like my two most favorite things. He was standing so close to me I could feel the hair on my arms and neck standing tall.

He cleared his throat, “I’ve heard of you and your family most of my life. I came here to finally meet the famous Alpha and his Luna that saved my pack many years ago, little did I know it would be their daughter I’d be mated to.”

His voice sent chills down my spine, in a good way. I closed my eyes and fought my nerves just enough to be able to look at him. When I opened my eyes, I realized he had moved in front of me.

It was just like the books. Suddenly, there was nothing around me but him. His tall, muscular frame filled my vision. Even through his black long-sleeved button-down shirt I could tell his arms were larger than both of mine put together. I took a moment to look him up and down, hoping my nerves would subside, but the more I looked at him the worse they got.

He was dressed nicely, jeans with the black button shirt, rolled up just to the midpoint of his upper arm. Dirty blonde hair and dark brown eyes, eyes that were watching every little movement mine

made.

“I’m Maximus, Alpha of the Wildwood Pack.” He said as he tilted his head slightly and narrowed his

eyes at me.

I fought everything in my body so I could just say something to not seem so weird. “Hi.”

Literally, one f*****g word. That’s all I could say. What the hell is wrong with me? As I mentally beat myself up for being such a damned weirdo, I noticed him smile.

Almost as if I had taken some kind of drug to calm my nerves, I instantly felt my body ease up.

I cleared my throat, “Yes,” I said, suddenly, “I am Kira, daughter of Alpha Colt.” I swallowed hard.

I could feel his gaze over my body. I hated that it felt so good just having him look at me. I wanted to say that I couldn’t tell if he was pleased with what he was seeing, but he made it pretty clear that he was. He was smiling and he even licked his lip a little. Talk about a confidence boost.

Trying to break the silence I asked, “Where is the Wildwood Pack?”

He cleared his throat and started standing up straighter and fixing his clothes, almost like my dad does when he goes into his serious mode.

“It’s across the mountain valley, about a day away in wolf form.” He answered. “Doesn’t look like you’ll be going too far from home.”

Ouch, instant with the whole taking me away from my family talk. I assumed I’d have a little warming up with him before that happened. Then again, I can’t reject him. He’s an alpha, so I’m

sure he already knows that no matter what I am stuck with him.

I know it’s normal, but knowing that you’re completely stuck with someone for the rest of your life after literally only a minute of meeting them feels very weird.

I didn’t want to offend him and make this whole thing even more weird than I already have, so I just laughed nervously and said, “I guess not.”

I felt him grab my hand, which startled me for only a split second before his touch felt like the most wonderful thing I’d ever felt before as I allowed my hand to form into his.
