‘Count on him? Why would I?’ Chloe thought, refusing to even consider it.

lan said, “Chloe, I’ve arranged for my finance team to deposit money into your parents’ account every month. It’s all from my personal funds, so nobody else knows.
“The money I borrowed from the company to help the Irvine family has already been paid back, and no one will ever find out. Seriously, you don’t need to feel guilty about any of it.”
Chloe pursed her lips.
She couldn’t help but feel a heavy burden pressing down on her heart.
Back in her previous life, Ian had held her so strictly accountable that it nearly ruined her.
She couldn’t just forget the pain because he was being generous now.
Chloe opened her bag, pulled out her bank card and the gift list, and thrust them into Ian’s hands.
Her expression was grim as she warned him, “Ian, I’ve already told you exactly how I feel.
“Just because no one knows what you’ve done for the Irvine family now doesn’t mean they won’t find out someday. Even if nobody ever does, I still can’t feel right about it.”
Ian blurted out, “I did all this because I wanted to!”
Chloe shook her head. “Even so, I don’t want to owe you for nothing!”
Everything he gave her now was just future leverage over her and her family.
His willingness always came with conditions.
They locked eyes, neither willing to back down.
Ian raised the gift list in his hand and asked Chloe, “And what about these?”
His tone grew sharper. “What’s the point of giving me this list?”
Chloe answered frankly, “I’ve packed up every gift you’ve given me over the years. If I were still your childhood sweetheart, I’d keep them with a clear conscience.”
After a brief pause, she went on, “But if I’m not, I’ll give them all back to you, untouched. That way, we’re even.”
On the sidewalk late at night, the two of them just stood there, silently locking eyes.
It was as if the whole world had fallen into silence.
Ian could feel his fear growing, and his eyes grew more conflicted every time he looked at Chloe.
Chloe saw that lan was just fixated on her, refusing to say a word
She said, “I really treasure all those years we grew up together, but if you want us to be strangers, that’s fine by me.”
With that, Chloe spun on her heel and walked away, not looking back.
In other words, Chloe was laying it out for lan. He had two paths to choose from.

Chapter 287
First, if lan let go of marrying her, she’d keep the gifts, and they stay childhood friends, just like before.
Second, if lan insisted on marrying her, Chloe would give all the gifts back, and they’d call it even.
Ian stood there, frozen, his fingers gripping the bank card so tightly that his knuckles turned pale.

‘In her previous life, all Chloe ever wanted was to break things of completely with me, Ian thought. ‘Was my gut feeling right all along? Was Chloe really time-traveled?’
Ian got back in his car and immediately called Mitchell.
It was 8:30 on Monday morning, and Ian had just arrived at the office.
Mitchell quickly reported his findings. “Mr. Hamilton, I’ve already sent Ms. Irvine’s current address to your phone. I also managed to contact the buyer of that jewelry set, but they refuse to part with it.”
lan sat at his desk, visibly irritated. “Cancel everything on my schedule today. Arrange a meeting with them.”
At 2 PM, Ian showed up at the Irvine family’s rented apartment.
Chloe’s parents welcomed him into the living room.
Ian handed the briefcase to Chloe’s parents. “Mr. Irvine, Mrs. Irvine, I managed to redeem this jewelry set for you. Now it’s back where it belongs.”
Frank and Jill exchanged a glance, and Jill opened the briefcase check. Sure enough, it was the emerald jewelry set that had been passed down in the Smith family for generations.
Jill locked the briefcase and handed it to Ian. “Ian, we already sold this jewelry set. Since you bought it back, it’s yours now. We can’t accept it.”
Ian hesitated for a moment before asking, “Mr. Irvine, Mrs. Irvine, can you tell me why Chloe suddenly called off the engagement?”
Seeing the hesitation on Chloe’s parents’ faces, Ian pressed, “I want the real answer.”
Frank let out a sigh. “Ian, you’ve got a great background, and you’re a wonderful guy. We’ve always liked you.
“But we’ve spoiled Chloe over the years, and if she says she doesn’t want to get married, we just can’t bring ourselves to push her?
Jill chimed in, “Chloe wasn’t lying to you. She told you the same thing she told us. And honestly, it’s good for her to have her own ambitions. She started her job at Westside General Hospital today.”
Jan lowered his gaze, his expression unreadable.
Chloe actually went straight to the Westside General Hospital.
Jill said, “Honestly, Frank and I are a little selfish, too. Chloe just graduated, and we’d love to keep our daughter at home for a couple more years.”
Ian assured them, “Mr. Irvine, Mrs. Irvine, if you’re not ready for Chloe to move out, after we get married, we can live with you at your place. I’ll let her work wherever she wants, and I promise she’ll always be treated well.”
The way Ian backed down really touched Chloe’s parents.
But they weren’t going to decide for their daughter.

Frank sighed again and again, “lan, honestly, Chloe’s just not in your league. Let’s just leave it up to fate.”

Jill added, “We appreciate what you’ve done, but please take the jewelry back for now. Whether she wants to keep it or not.
that’s Chloe’s call.”
Since Frank had already made his stance clear, Ian could only nod in agreement.
He said, “Alright, I’ll keep the jewelry safe for now. Whenever you want it, just say the word, and I’ll personally bring it over, no questions asked.”
