At three in the afternoon, in the CEO’s Office of the Hamilton Group.
Mitchell knocked and entered, placing two invitations on Ian’s desk.
“Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Young from Veridian Investments is hosting a charity gala and has specifically invited you and Ms. Mia to attend,” Mitchell said.
Just then, Mia knocked and entered, and Mitchell went to make tea.
Ian stood up. “Why aren’t you at school today?”
Mia plopped down in Ian’s office chair, her face full of gloom.
Mia complained, “Edward is making me go to the Young family’s charity gala. I just made one little comment, and Dad totally went off on me.
“And that Dustin Young guy has been after me for three years and still won’t quit. Ian, you gotta help me out here.”
Ian’s long, slender fingers tapped on the desk. “Since Edward already agreed to the Young Residence, it would look bad if you didn’t go. Just show your face and get it over with.”
Mia shot up from the chair. “Ian, you know exactly what Edward’s planning. You really trust me to go alóne?”
Ian slid the two invitations over to her. “If you don’t want Edward picking your fiancé, then you’d better find someone you actually like and lock it down before Edward does it for you.”
“Finding a guy isn’t like shopping for a bag. It’s not that easy!” Mia snapped.
Mia grabbed the invitations and stormed out, fuming.
Mitchell saw her out and came back. “Mr. Hamilton, are you sure it’s safe to let Ms. Mia go by herself?”
Ian glanced down. “She won’t be alone. Someone will keep her in check.”
Mia was totally clueless. She kept calling Patrick brother, never realizing how he really felt. And Patrick, scared of messing things up, always kept his feelings hidden.
Back in his old life, Ian just let them do their own thing. Their relationship was stuck in limbo, and he died without ever seeing them get their happy ending.
Chloe told him that after he was gone, Patrick looked after Mia and his parents day and night, doing everything for Mia without ever asking for anything in return.
Mia ended up seeing Patrick as the only person she could truly rely on.
Patrick was Ian’s best friend, and honestly, he was the perfect match for Mia.

This time, Ian was determined to play matchmaker and make sure they finally got together for real.
That night, just as Ian got home, Patrick showed up at his door.
Ian was lounging on the couch in dark pajamas, pouring Patrick a drink.
Patrick plopped down, clearly annoyed.
He took the glass and said to Ian, “You know exactly what Dustin is after with Mia. What’s the point of going to that stupid charity gala?”
Ian replied offhandedly, “No matter how useless Dustin is, he’s still your cousin. Easy, man.”
Patrick just rolled his eyes and knocked back his drink.
Patrick set his glass down, his face growing serious.
Patrick said, “Look, my family is trying to set me up for an engagement. They just brought some girls home out of nowhere.
“I’m already losing my mind here, so don’t drag me into your mess. You’re taking Mia to the gala on Saturday.”
Ian swirled his wine glass, totally unfazed. “No worries. If you’re tied up, Mia can handle it herself.”
Patrick jumped up, looking pissed. “Seriously, Ian? After all we’ve been through, you want Mia to end up with my cousin?”
Ian just smirked. “Or she could end up as your wife, if you’ve got the guts.”
Patrick groaned, “You know exactly how Mia treats me. If I ever confessed, she would smack me into next week and never speak to me again!”
Ian just stared at him, speechless.
Patrick, still pissed, couldn’t help but dig at Ian.
Patrick snapped, “You’re rotten to the core, man. No wonder Chloe wants nothing to do with you!
“Honestly, you’re destined to die single for three lifetimes, and you totally deserve it.
“When Chloe gets married, I’ll make you her best man. So you can watch her spend her wedding night with someone else, just to drive you crazy!”
Patrick stormed out, still muttering curses under his breath.
Ian was just lost for words.
As Patrick was about to leave, Ian called after him, “Did Chloe message you?”
Patrick turned back with a smug look. “She messaged me as soon as her plane landed. Sent me a whole bunch.”

After Patrick left, Ian took out his phone.
Chloe hadn’t called or texted him.
Ian was getting antsy, unable to settle down.
He gripped his phone, pacing alone in the living room.
After a long moment of hesitation, he finally shot Chloe a message.
More than ten minutes passed, but Chloe still hadn’t replied.
Ian just suffered in silence, the anxiety eating him up inside.
After another ten minutes or so, Ian finally worked up the nerve to make a video call to Chloe.
Chloe had just gotten out of the bathroom after a shower when she saw the video call pop up. She picked it up right away.
Seeing Ian on the screen, Chloe said, totally unfazed, “Ian.”
Ian asked if she’d had dinner yet and how she was settling in.
After a bit of small talk, Chloe was ready to hang up and call it a night.
Ian sounded a little stressed. “Before you go to bed, double-check the doors and windows. Make sure everything’s locked up tight. And tomorrow-”
Chloe cut him off, leaning right into the camera. “I wanted a brother, not a dad. Chill out, okay? Go get
some rest.”
With that, she hung up.
Chloe thought, ‘Now he decides to care.
“Too little, too late.’
Chloe snuggled into her cozy bed.
On Ian’s side, he couldn’t sleep at all.
She used to call him lan affectionately, but now it was just Ian calmly.
