Chapter 334

Chapter 334

Every word Chloe tossed out so lightly hit Ian like a sledgehammer.

If he had figured out what Chloe really meant earlier, they wouldn’t be standing on opposite sides now.

He had brought all this on himself.

The pain in his arm was nothing compared to the storm raging in his chest.

Ian swallowed the bitter taste in his mouth, opened the car door for Chloe, and drove her home.

Early the next morning, Chloe had just arrived at her office when Hazel knocked and walked in.

Chloe greeted her politely.

Hazel rubbed her forehead, frowning. “Dr. Irvine, I haven’t been sleeping well these past few days. I just dropped by without making an appointment to see if you could check my pulse. I hope I’m not bothering you.”

Chloe quickly shook her head. “Please, have a seat.”

Antonio was a leading authority in medicine. If Hazel had any health problems, she hardly needed Chloe for help.

She was clearly here with an agenda.

Hazel was Antonio’s wife, and the whole Westside General Hospital basically belonged to the Jordan family. Chloe knew better than to be anything but respectful.

Just as Chloe was about to sit down, Hazel spoke up again, “Why don’t we go to Eric’s office instead? The environment there is a bit nicer.”

Chloe hesitated.

Hazel raised an eyebrow. “Or should I have Eric come and get you himself?”

Before Hazel could finish, Chloe obediently stood up.

She just dropped Eric off at the Jordan residence’s door and left right away, so the Jordans probably didn’t notice anything unusual.

When they reached Eric’s office, they heard voices inside. Hazel grabbed Chloe and put a finger to her lips, signaling her to be quiet.

Chloe stared in disbelief as Hazel stood at the door, eavesdropping with total focus. She was so stunned that her eyes nearly popped out.

Hazel, always so glamorous and showy, actually had a secret hobby of listening in on other people’s conversations.

Hazel didn’t just eavesdrop by herself. She even dragged Chloe into it.

Inside the office, Eric’s expression was icy as he spoke to Phoebe. “You can either resign yourself, or I’ll ship you off to another branch out of town. It’s up to you.”

Phoebe practically shrieked, unable to believe what she was hearing. “Mr. Jordan, I just brought you breakfast! Do you really have to go this far?”

Eric stood behind his desk, with Phoebe standing across from him.

Eric said, “I told you to stop bringing me things. I don’t want my fiancée to misunderstand.”

Phoebe wasn’t about to give up. “I already asked your parents. You don’t have a girlfriend, so where did this fiancée come from? If you bring her here and let her tell me herself, I’ll believe you and leave you alone for good!”

Eric leaned forward, hands braced on the desk, sounding impatient. “Dr. Hurst, you really should know your limits. You’re not in a position to meet my fiancée.”

Phoebe was convinced Eric was lying. “If she won’t come see me, that means she doesn’t exist! You’re just making excuses!”

Eric replied, “When we get married, Dr. Hurst, you and Baker can come to the wedding and have a drink

with us.”

Phoebe snapped, “Eric, you—”

Eric cut her off. “I’m only cutting you some slack because of your dad. Pack up your stuff and don’t bother coming in tomorrow.”

Chloe, standing at the doorway, watched Eric shut down Phoebe’s advances with a serious face. She shrank back a little, hoping not to get caught listening in.

Normally, Eric was calm and polite, never pulling rank on his colleagues.

She never expected him to have such a tough side.

Hazel kept watching Chloe’s reaction, and then, out of nowhere, asked, “Dr. Irvine, do you know who Eric’s fiancée is?”

Chloe met Hazel’s mischievous gaze and instinctively waved her hands and shook her head.

‘Why do all the Jordan family members always give me that intense, X-ray stare?’ Chloe thought.

Eric did it, Sophie did it, and now Hazel’s at it too.

When Phoebe stepped out of the office, Hazel yanked Chloe back so they wouldn’t get caught eavesdropping.

Phoebe’s expression flipped in an instant when she spotted Hazel. “Mrs. Jordan.”

Hazel pulled out a tissue and handed it to Phoebe, who was wiping away tears. “Dr. Hurst, what happened?”

Phoebe didn’t hold anything back. “Mrs. Jordan, both our families were trying to match me with Mr.

Jordan. I put myself out there, but not only did he shoot me down, he even kicked me out of my job.”

Hazel took Phoebe’s hand and said seriously, “Look at you. You’re beautiful, you come from a good family, and you’re smart as hell. Honestly, even a mule would be a better catch than our Eric.”

Phoebe just stared, lost for words.

Chloe was speechless.

Hazel kept going. “Don’t let Eric’s looks fool you. He’s really not all that. He’s already in his thirties and hasn’t had a single girlfriend. Let that sink in.”

Hazel’s words left Phoebe completely baffled, staring in confusion.

‘Wait, does Eric have some kind of issue down there? Maybe he’s not even functional?’ Phoebe wondered. ‘Or maybe he’s just putting on that gentleman act, but deep down, he’s a total creep? Or maybe he just doesn’t like women at all?’

Phoebe’s mind was running wild with all sorts of crazy theories when her eyes suddenly locked onto Chloe. “Dr. Irvine, why are you here too?”

Chloe was Eric’s junior, and he’d pulled all the strings for her, from getting her hired to making sure she got her official position.

Her dad, Baker Hurst, was one of the directors at Westside General Hospital. Most people had no clue about the relationship between Chloe and Eric, but Phoebe had known it ages ago.

‘Hold up, is Chloe the “fiancée” Eric keeps mentioning?’ Phoebe thought, her suspicion growing.

Before Chloe could say a word, Hazel jumped in. “I brought Dr. Irvine to Eric’s office to check my pulse. Got a problem with that, Dr. Hurst?”

Phoebe flashed a nervous smile. “Sorry, Mrs. Jordan. I didn’t mean anything by it.”

Hazel snapped at Chloe, “My time is valuable. Hurry up and get in there. Start prepping!”
