"Zach, why did you choose surrogacy to have a son instead of getting married?"
Before Zachary could answer Sienna’s question, his cell phone rang, breaking the silence between them. He barely glanced at the screen and made no move to answer it, as though whoever was calling could wait.
Curious, Sienna looked at the illuminated screen. The moment she saw the caller ID: Little Boss. A knowing smile spread across her face.
"It’s Sky," she said softly. "I feel bad. He’s probably starving by now."
Her eyes shifted to the digital clock on the dashboard. It was already close to eight in the evening.
Zachary looked at her, and the concern in his eyes made her chest tighten.
"Can you answer it for me?" he asked in his usual calm voice. "He won’t complain if he hears your voice."
Without hesitation, Sienna picked up the phone and switched it to speaker mode. Before she could even greet him, Skylar’s cheerful but impatient voice came through the speakers.
"Daddy, where are you? Why aren’t you home yet? It’s almost eight o’clock!"
His adorable complaint drew a quiet chuckle from Zachary.
Sienna, however, couldn’t find it amusing. Instead, she fought back the tears threatening to spill. The little boy speaking so naturally on the other end of the call was her son—the child she had carried for nine months, the baby she had loved long before she had ever seen his face.
"S-Sky..." she whispered, her voice trembling before the rest of her words disappeared.
A brief silence followed, as though Skylar had been caught off guard by the sound of her voice.
"Oh... Mommy?" His voice became noticeably softer. "Is that you?"
"Yes, sweetheart. It’s me," Sienna replied, forcing herself to stay calm. She glanced at Zachary before continuing. "Your daddy is driving, and we’re almost home."
"In five minutes," Zachary added without taking his eyes off the road.
Sienna smiled.
"Did you hear that, Sky?"
"Yes, Mommy!" His excitement instantly returned. "Okay! I’ll ask Uncle Chef to prepare a special dinner for Mommy."
Her heart warmed at his thoughtfulness.
"All right. We’ll see you soon."
"See you, Mommy!"
The call ended, leaving only the very soft humming sound from the car’s engine filling the interior once again.
Sienna carefully placed Zachary’s phone back where she had picked it up and released a long, slow breath. Only then did she realize how tightly she had been holding it.
Until recently, she had only dared to hope that Skylar was her son. She had clung to that impossible wish despite knowing how unlikely it seemed.
But the truth had surpassed every hope she had ever buried inside her heart. Skylar truly was her child, the little boy conceived from her own eggs, the baby she had carried beneath her heart for nine precious months before giving him away.
Knowing that truth changed everything.
Even hearing his voice again made her emotions overflow.
Now she was only minutes away from seeing him.
The thought alone made her pulse race. She imagined wrapping him in her arms, holding him tightly enough to make up for every year they had spent apart. She wanted to kiss his forehead, brush back his hair, and tell him how much she had missed him, even when she hadn’t known he belonged to her.
Without taking his attention away from the road, he reached over and gently squeezed her hand.
She turned toward him and offered a small smile.
"Is it really that obvious?" she asked.
He smiled back. "Hm. It shows all over your face."
She laughed softly before letting out another deep breath.
"I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous," she admitted. "I really am. This is the first time I’ve ever come to your house. And I’m not even coming as a guest. I’m coming here as your wife."
Zachary’s smile grew warmer.
"Our house," he corrected gently.
The words settled softly in her heart.
"You don’t have to worry," he continued. "The house is big, but only Skylar and I actually live there. The household staff stays in a separate building behind the property."
As the mansion gradually came into view in the distance, he continued explaining.
"They only come over during working hours in the morning and evening. Most of the time, you won’t even notice they’re around. You’ll only see a few of them during the day."
Sienna shook her head.
"That’s not what I’m nervous about."
