Chapter 104
Third Person’s POV
The rhythm of keyboard clicks paused for an almost imperceptible moment.
Camille’s fingertips hovered midair for less than half a second before returning to the keys. Her pheromones carried the elegant, steady scent of sweet orange, as if nothing had disturbed them. Yet, beneath that sweetness, a faint, suppressed sharpness flickered.
She knew exactly who he meant.
Melanie.
She was beautiful.
Cool, understated beauty–sharp bone structure, a clean aura, no unnecessary adornment–but still the kind that drew Alpha attention instinctively.
Hearing Evander’s question, Camille’s first thought was that he might have taken an interest in Melanie. But then the words she’d overheard at the auction, coupled with Evander’s recent attitude toward her, flashed through her mind. She realized she’d misread the situation.
Camille didn’t look up. Her voice was as calm and still as a windless lake.
“Not well. Why?”
Evander’s gaze remained fixed on the other side of the glass.
Melanie stood shoulder to shoulder with Elmer, discussing data structures in hushed tones. She had a habit of tilting her head slightly when she spoke, her long hair cascading along her shoulder line–a restrained, focused gesture.
Evander narrowed his eyes.
“The way she talks with Alpha Elmer… seems competent?”
Camille gently closed a page of her notebook.
“Not sure.” Her tone remained detached. “But I heard she only has an undergraduate degree.”
Evander’s eyebrows twitched slightly.
“Only an undergraduate degree?”
“Mhm.”
That answer crystallized the vague judgment forming in his mind.
Her academic credentials couldn’t match Camille’s. Her pheromone allure paled in comparison. If she harbored any hostility toward Camille, fearing her Alpha mate might be stolen–that would be predictable wolf instincts. But it she felt wary or hostile simply because another female was more accomplished… that was petty.
The thought shifted Evander’s previously unruffled impression of Melanie, tilting it subtly negative.
On the other side, Elmer finished processing a segment of code and stretched his shoulders. He glanced at the conterence room through the glass, then leaned close to Melanie’s ear, lowering his voice.
“Has Evander taken a liking to Camille?”
Melanie’s focus stayed on the complex data streams on her screen, her wolf instincts attuned to numerical anomalies. She paused, registering who he meant, then replied coolly, detachedly:

“Probably.”
No inflection. As if commenting on the weather.
She tugged at Elmer’s sleeve.
“Enough gossip. This data still has issues. Finish early, leave early.”
Elmer pursed his lips.
“What taste.”
He muttered under his breath but let it drop.
On the other side of the glass, Evander caught Elmer’s gaze sweep their way. For a moment, he assumed it was Camille Elmer was looking at. Then he saw Melanie frown and pull Elmer back toward his workstation.
Instinctively, he interpreted the scene: her displeasure at her Alpha staring at another female.
A twinge of unease settled in his chest.
Camille had just hit a technical roadblock. She paused her work, about to seek Elmer’s confirmation on the algorithm structure, but when she looked up-
It wasn’t just Elmer.
Several core members from Swift Tech had gathered around Melanie. She dissected the data logic calmly, her tone clear, her rhythm steady. The scene almost made her seem like the team’s core.
Camille’s eyes darkened briefly before she averted her gaze. The sweet orange scent in the air thickened, sharpened.
It wasn’t until past five in the afternoon that the project entered its closing stages. The cooperation agreement between Wale Tech and Swift Tech was finalized. Halsy invited everyone into the conference room for a brief break.
He smiled.
“It’s getting late. How about we grab dinner together?”
Evander’s heart fluttered slightly. He instinctively glanced at Camille.
She seemed oblivious to his gaze. Her tone was gentle, proper:
“I’m sorry. Archer will be picking me up shortly. We have plans. I won’t be joining you.”
Hearing that name, Evander’s eyes darkened. His interest evaporated instantly.
“I have things to attend to as well. Another time.”
Camille showed no surprise. She merely tidied her documents with a light touch, expression elegant as ever.
Elmer observed everything clearly. He lifted his coffee cup, lightly touching the run of Melanie’s cup, a smile of ambiguous meaning playing on his lips.
“We, on the other hand, are free, aren’t we?”
Melanie understood the subtle tease and nodded.
“Mhm.”
Camille watched, brow furrowed slightly. Suddenly she realized–Elner’s protective stance toward Melanie was far stronger than she’d imagined.

They descended the stairs together. Reaching the lobby, Camille answered a call. Her demeanor softened instantly. After hanging up, she said:
“Archer will be here soon. I’ll wait with you.”
Minutes later, a black SUV pulled up. The door opened. Archer stepped out. Night shadows and neon lights draped his shoulders, and the scent of patchouli filled the air.
It was natural Alpha dominance. Without effort, surrounding wolves instinctively lowered their presence.
He gave brief nods to Evander and Elmer. His gaze swept over Melanie, pausing just for a fraction of a second–too brief to be certain. He said nothing. Camille had already walked to his side. They stood within each other’s shoulder line, their scents blending naturally, as if born to be together.
Evander exchanged pleasantries with him. Elmer snorted lightly, tone cold:
“We have a dinner appointment, so we’ll be leaving first.”
Archer nodded.
“Alright.”
Elmer and Melanie led the way out. The patchouli scent dispersed into the evening breeze.
After dinner, Melanie drove home alone. The moment she entered, her communicator vibrated. Caller ID–Alpha Dwight. Her
fingers hesitated before answering.
“The contract is finalized,” his voice cool and measured. “You can confirm with your uncle.”
