The Breaking Point of Mate: Giving Up on My Alpha novel Chapter 108

Chapter 108

Melanie’s POV

Their voices eventually faded away, but I stayed in front of the mirror, staring at the woman looking back at mepalefaced, with eyes that had turned exceptionally cold and hard.

Ten minutes later, I walked out of the lobby looking perfectly composed.

After a quiet meal with Gillian, my car seemed to find its own way to the gates of the care facility on the outskirts of Santa Monica.

I wanted to see Rosemary.

But then I thought about her shattered mental state, and the director’s warning echoed in my head: No visitors she recognizes, or we risk a total breakdown.

My hands shook violently against the steering wheel.

In the end, I didn’t get out of the car. After idling at the gate that represented both her prison and her protection for a long time,

I pulled a sharp Uturn and headed back to my cold, empty apartment.

I locked myself in my room and buried my head in AI model code.

Only these dry, emotionless data points could make me forget the suffocating bitterness tightening in my chest.

I don’t know how much time passed, but the LA skyline was already glowing outside my window when my commstone vibrated, shattering the silence. 1

Archer’s name flashed on the screen, making my fingertips go numb.

I let it ring until it timed out. A few minutes later, he called again, stubborn as ever.

I still didn’t pick up.

Finally, the stone buzzed with a short text, Moira wants us back at the Razor estate for dinner.

I stared at the words for a few seconds, then flipped the stone facedown and pushed it to the far edge of my desk.

To drown out the lingering heaviness in my chest, I mindlessly ordered some takeout.

Around 7:00 PM, just as I was forcing down the last bite of food, Moira called.

I could ignore Archer, but I could never ignore her.

During my darkest days, she was the only one who offered me a shield. That kind of debt is etched into my marrow.

Hi, Grandma,I said, keeping my voice as steady as possible.

Melanie,Moira’s kind voice carried a hint of worry. Archer told me you’ve been working nonstop these past couple of days. Are you still at it?

I let out a silent breath of relief.

Since Archer had already made up an excuse for my absence, I leaned into it. Yes, the project just hit a critical phase. I’m so sorry, Grandma. I don’t think I can make it back for dinner tonight.

It’s alright, child. I just don’t want you working yourself to the bone. Know when to stop.

I will, Grandma.

Good,Moira paused, her voice softening with a touch of favoritism. When Archer comes back tomorrow, I’ll have him bring

you some pastries from the pack’s chefs. Even if you’re busy, you have to eat.

Okay.

I hung up and forced myself back into the massive streams of data.

By 9:00 PM, after my brain had been thoroughly washed by cold logic, the shadows in my mind finally started to lift.

That’s when Elmer called, his tone as light as ever. Need to blow off some steam?

Half an hour later, I pulled up to a club in West Hollywood.

Elmer was standing at the entrance, the dim neon lights outlining his roguish silhouette. He looked me over and asked quietly, Want a drink?

I hesitated for a second, looking at the heavy metal music pulsing from inside. Yeah. Let’s do it.

Elmer leaned in suddenly, his sharp Alpha senses picking up the exhaustion buried deep in my eyes. Bad mood?

Better now,I said, dodging his gaze.

He didn’t push. He led me to the bar and ordered a cocktail called Azure Silence-something midstrength.

I traced the chilled rim of my glass, taking small sips while listening to him and his friends ramble on about nothing.

In the middle of the noise and the smell of gin, I didn’t notice two sets of eyes on the secondfloor VIP balcony. They cut through the shifting laser lights and locked onto me.

Against the backdrop of sweating, dancing bodies, I looked like an outsider who had accidentally stumbled into an abyss.

Elmer turned to me. Want to dance?

I was not exactly a regular on the dance floor, but in that moment, I felt a sudden urge to use physical exhaustion to shake off the past. Sure.

Once in the crowd, I followed Elmer’s lead, moving mechanically to the heavy bass.

Slowly, the buzz from the alcohol took over. I relaxed, my body swaying with the rhythm.

Just as I was starting to get lost in the music, the commstone in my bag started vibrating like crazy.

I pulled it out to check the screen, and I froze like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over my head.

Elmer leaned over to look.

The second he saw the name, his grin died, and he looked like his hair was standing on end. Holy crap, it’s Professor Norman!

We practically made a run for it, pushing through the dancing bodies toward the exit.

As we passed the corner below the bar, I instinctively glanced up. I locked eyes with two men.

I didn’t recognize either of them, so I quickly looked away and pushed through the heavy soundproof doors into the night.

Standing in the cool midnight air, my voice switched from distant to guilty student” mode. Professor.

Pick me up tomorrow at noon,Professor Norman’s voice was old and commanding, leaving zero room for negotiation

Wait, what? Before I could even ask why, he hung up.
