Third Person’s POV
After Melanie left, the man boarded the boat waiting for him and took off his hat and mask.
His phone rang. He took the call while allowing his subordinates to tend to his wound.
Before he could speak, Edric’s anxious voice came through. “Dwight, are you okay? My guy said he didn’t pick you up. Where are you?”
“Had a small issue, but I’m at the dock now.”
“Thank God you’re okay! What the hell happened? You scared the life out of me!”
After hanging up, Dwight looked at the tall banyan tree in the distance and fell into thought.
Melanie’s POV
I didn’t head home until the next day, after Gillian’s fever had completely broken.
I had an event to attend the following evening, so I went out specifically to pick up a dress.
When I arrived at the high–end boutique, the store manager and several staff were huddled around a gown, carefully arranging
They didn’t notice me until I walked closer.
“Excuse me, ma’am, how can I help you?”
“I’m just looking around.”
“Of course.”
Even though I became Archer’s mate and was technically the mistress of the Atkinson family, I’d barely been to any formal events over the years.
After all, Archer and Rebecca never brought me along, even for official functions.
As for Moira, she retired from the spotlight long ago and doesn’t care about the social scene anymore.
I had’t studied gowns much, but Gillian worked in the high–end fashion industry, so I’d picked up a basic sense of style just from being around her.
Still, there were so many beautiful dresses in the shop that it was overwhelming.
I didn’t plan on spending a lot of time searching; I just wanted something decent.
But just as I decided that, the gown the staff had been fussing over came into my full view.
It was a pale purple, semi–sheer tulle dress cinched at the waist. The embroidered flowers on the waist were exquisite, and paired with the elegant, expensive necklace on the mannequin’s neck, it was a perfect blend of airy elegance and sheer luxury.
I couldn’t help but walk over. Just as I reached out to touch the fabric, the manager quickly grabbed my hand.
I frowned from the pain, and the manager immediately let go “I’m so sorry, ma’am, I didn’t mean to. It’s just that this gown is a private custom order for one of our VIP clients. It’s the only one in the world and incredibly expensive. We simply can’t afford a mistake…”
“It’s fine.”
I was a little disappointed that the gown already had an owner.

In the end, I chose a jacquard off–white silk gown.
As I paid and watched the staff carefully pack the dress, I overheard two employees whispering nearby. “That dress, plus the necklace, is rumored to be worth over one million dollars total. It’s like wearing a mansion. Rich people are seriously extravagant.”
“Tell me about it. And she’ll probably only wear it once…”
One million dollars… Wow, I couldn’t afford something that expensive even if it hadn’t been claimed.
I shook my head and left.
Back home, Gillian called. When she found out I was attending a banquet the next day, she rushed over the following afternoon to personally do my styling.
My choice of gown was good, and with the makeup Gillian meticulously applied, my natural elegance was perfectly highlighted.
Elmer arrived that evening to pick me up. His eyes lit up when he saw me. “You look stunning. It suits you perfectly.”
“Thank you.”
Once we were in the car, Elmer asked, “So, you’re officially starting back at the company tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“That’s great, especially since Camille-
Elmer paused, then explained, “The algorithm genius I mentioned before? She’s officially starting tomorrow, too. I can introduce you then-”
My expression froze, and my heart dropped. “Camille? The Camille?”
Elmer nodded, looking surprised. “Yeah, do you know her?”
“She’s my half–sister.”
Elmer was stunned. He knew a bit about my family situation.
I added, “She’s also Archer’s mistress.”
The car slammed to a stop, the tires screeching on the pavement. Elmer stared at me,
wide–eyed. “You-”
I shook my head, my voice calm. “I’m fine.”
I paused, then continued, “Regardless of whether you think I’m abusing my position, I won’t agree to her joining our company.” Elmer immediately dropped his shocked expression, turning serious. “No, I support your decision. Absolutely.”
I felt a wave of warmth. “Thank you. Though, you’ll be losing a genius because of this.”
Elmer shook his head, giving me a knowing smile. “She is indeed a genius in the field of algorithms. But compared to you, she’s completely unremarkable.”
