Chapter 28
Melanie’s POV
I was a major shareholder, but for certain reasons, that status hadn’t been made public.
Camille shouldn’t know my connection to the company, so she couldn’t be coming after me.
Elmer stroked his chin and suddenly smiled. “When we chatted the other day, she brought up our company’s programming language. She said she was particularly interested in CUAP.”
CUAP was the language I led the team to research and design when I was 17.
At the time, many people thought the language was nothing special, but it was actually our most critical technological barrier.
Over the years, people gradually realized its value. Plenty of professional teams tried to deconstruct and study it but failed to crack it. Now, the programming language was an insurmountable presence.
No doubt about it, Camille was coming for CUAP.
“Come to think of it, a lot of the excellent talent we’ve hired over the last two or three years have all come here because of this programming language.”
[ hadn’t expected that to be the reason.
Elmer looked at me, reached out, and ruffled my hair, laughing. “See? That’s why I said she’s completely unremarkable next to you. I wasn’t exaggerating.”
When we arrived, the guests in the ballroom were mostly all there.
The moment I stepped into the hall, I could feel a lot of eyes on me.
The host of the banquet knew Elmer well and smiled as he came over to greet us.
But just as he was about to say hello to Elmer and me, more guests arrived at the entrance.
Seeing the newcomers, the host froze, his eyes wide with surprise. The other guests in the ballroom did the same, stopping their conversations and looking shocked.
Elmer and I were curious about the sudden excited reactions, and as we were about to turn and look, the host gave us an apologetic look and walked past us toward the door. “Archer, Dwight, Edric-”
When I heard the names, my heart tightened. I had a sudden hunch.
looked back. The people who had arrived were indeed them.
But Camille was there too.
What surprised me even more was that Camille was wearing the pale purple gown I had seen at the boutique yesterday. Camille herself was tall and curvy, with a strong presence. The luxurious and ethereal gown looked sexy and elegant on her, yet also gave off an air of untouchable distance.
The surrounding guests started whispering.
“It’s Archer, Dwight, and Edric! Don’t they rarely go to banquets? Why are they all here all of a sudden?”
“I know, what’s going on?”
“Who’s that gorgeous woman with them? Is she Archer’s date? No surprise, a big shot like him has better taste in dates than the rest of us!”

“But I prefer the beautiful woman in the beige dress just now. She has a clean, gentle, and really elegant vibe. I think her look is even rarer than the one with Archer. Too bad she already has a date.”
Then, I heard someone gasp, “Oh my god, that dress! I saw it at the boutique yesterday and thought it was absolutely stunning! The manager said some big shot ordered it custom–made for his girlfriend. I was wondering who it was. I can’t believe it’s Archer! One million bucks, seriously!”
“What? One million?!”
Hearing that, I slowly lowered my eyes.
While Marvin’s business was doing well now, spending tens of millions on an outfit for a single event was too much of a splurge for their current financial standing.
But one million dollars was nothing to Archer.
I had to admit, Archer was truly invested in Camille.
And that dress was custom–ordered half a month ago. “Does that mean Archer had planned on bringing Camille to this event for a while?”
Elmer knew Archer rarely accepted banquet invitations, so he was surprised by the coincidence, and even more surprised that Archer had brought Camille.
He looked at me worriedly. “Melanie…”
I smiled, shaking my head calmly. “I’m okay.”
I was a little surprised at first, but I truly don’t care anymore.
I’d always been someone who acts on her ideas.
In my professional life, if I had an idea or an interest, I dived in completely, not caring if the research results didn’t have market value right away.
It was the same in my love life. When I loved Archer, I was willing to risk my future, abandon my chance for advanced studies, and dedicate myself entirely to him.
