Chapter 41

Melanie’s POV

After hanging up with Gillian, I instinctively pulled out my phone and checked my X app. 1

Sure enough, the footage from the Pack Assembly had been shared by attendees, and the discussion was trending on X.

Archer’s name stood out starkly in the hot topics.

He was the Alpha of the Razor Pack, commanding high respect among werewolves.

He was also the CEO of the Atkinson Group and owned several investment funds and tech companies, making him highly visible to the general public as well.

The comments were flying across the screen.

[OMG, is this handsome guy really that genius entrepreneur, Archer?]

[The girl’s fiancé isn’t bad either, but compared to Archer? Nah. Their auras aren’t even on the same level.]

[25yearold Ph.D., race car driver, hacker, and she does diving and offroading? This girl’s résumé is seriously impressive.]

[She raced last time, and Archer was in the stands. Did you see that photo? His eyes were full of pride.]

[Why would someone with a boyfriend like Archer go after someone else’s fiancé?]

I stopped reading and exited the app immediately.

Although I had decided to sever the mating bond, the ceremony wasn’t complete, so a faint pull still existed between Archer and me. (1

Images and discussions like these caused my wolf to become agitated.

Moira had said she called Archer and told him to come pick me up at the hot springs resort.

But by now, the night was deep, the valley fog had settled, and there was no communication, no sign of him.

He probably planned to come, but then something happened with Camille, and he went to fix it, conveniently forgetting me.

That was normal, and it happened often.

I took a deep breath, collected my thoughts, and stopped dwelling on anything about Archer,

At eleven, I arrived at my apartment. I showered, fell into bed, and slept soundly through the night.

The next day, I had breakfast and went to the office as usual.

I had just picked up the first bite of my salad at lunchtime when Trista calledthis was the first time she called since she quietly slipped away from the resort.

Morn

Mhm,I answered. Did you eat yet?

Just finished!

Her voice was cheerful but held a slight nervousness, like a small pup whose tail wasn’t completely hidden.

I recognized the guilty rhythm in her voice but didn’t call her out on it.

What classes did you have this week?I asked, softening my tone. Wolf history, boundary rules, or extra shift practice?

UmWolf history, and scent tracking. She paused. A little shift practice too.

Good. Don’t fall behind on your homework. Remember to finish your tracking log.I only touched on the key points, then told her to get back to class.

I hung up and put my phone face down on the table.

The area around my scent gland felt warm. My pheromones instinctively tried to surge outthat was the shewolf’s protective instinct for her pup.

I took a deep breath, slowly pulling the scent back in, pressing my Luna aura down to the lowest level, keeping any scent from leaking out.

I had been intentionally minimizing contact lately, no longer chasing her with questions every day.

Since I decided to submit the mating bond severance petition, my presence in the Razor Pack was fading.

I rarely went to the main house, avoided Stone Circle meetings, and didn’t actively respond to pack calls.

Correspondingly, the pack’s pull on me was also diminishing.

But she was still my childjust hearing her name made my wolf lift her head, her ears perked.

Protection was an instinct carved into my bones; letting go required repeated selfcontrol.

I was redefining the boundaries.

Back at my desk, Elmer walked over. The tech expo is tomorrow. Should we all meet here at the office and leave together?

Sounds good,I replied.

The next morning, I drove out. Just as I got onto the highway, the warning lights on the dashboard flashed, and the car stalled.

The car behind me couldn’t stop in time and rearended me. The sound of metal crashing was loud.

I got out, apologized to the other driver, motioned for everyone to put on their hazard lights, then called 911 and roadside assistance, reporting my location and the accident level.

This whole process would take at least forty minutes. But I needed to get to the expo.

Car trouble?A deep voice came from the opposite sidewalk, accompanied by the strong scent of a werewolf approaching.

I looked upit was Dwight.

It was him, but why was he here?

I just nodded and didn’t talk to him further, quickly sending a text to Elmer, Don’t wait for me. Go on ahead. I’ll handle this and come later.

A traffic accident will take time,he replied. I’ll call my contact to help, but they’ll still take thirty or forty minutes to get here.

It’s fine. I can just arrive late.I just needed to make sure I didn’t miss the key part of the event.
