Silas's expression remained perfectly cool. "You didn't ask."
Alaina was utterly speechless.
She stood up by the side of the bed. "You're crossing the line, Silas. What did you say before we signed the agreement? You said you only needed to borrow my name, and I wouldn't actually have to fulfill the duties of Mrs. Summers. I went out of my way to cooperate with you, and you played me for a fool."
With that, she stormed out of the room in a huff.
Silas stared at the door she had slammed shut, his cold eyes dropping slightly as he pressed his lips into a tight line.
The next day.
Alaina left the house early by herself.
She specifically asked Michelle to meet her for breakfast at a diner near The Security Administration.
She intended to clarify her relationship with Silas once and for all.
Without going into the dangerous specifics, she simply explained that she and Silas were in a marriage of convenience for certain complicated reasons.
"That's all I can tell you," she requested earnestly. "Please, you have to keep this a secret."
Michelle nodded vigorously, looking entirely solemn. "Don't worry, Boss. I thought about it last night. Mr. Summers's status is highly classified, and so is yours. It completely makes sense that your relationship is kept under wraps."
"Thank you for understanding."
"No need to thank me!" Michelle smiled adorably. "Actually, I used to secretly ship the two of you as a couple, and I can't believe it's actually true."
Alaina nearly choked on her soy milk. She quickly emphasized, "We are strictly business partners. Please stop shipping us like we're some romantic couple."
"I'll try, I'll try," Michelle giggled, leaning in a little closer. "But I just don't get it. Mr. Summers is so incredible—how can you not feel even a tiny bit tempted? Do you really not like older men like him?"
Alaina shook her head, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. "I don't have the time or energy to worry about liking anyone, whether they're older or younger men. I really don't care."
Michelle looked at her with pure admiration. "You're amazing, Boss. I need to be more like you and focus entirely on my career."
Alaina smiled.
