Silas stared unblinking at her swollen eyes and nose, curling up one side of his mouth in an expression that heavily suggested schadenfreude.
The normally unsmiling man had unprecedentedly revealed such a smile, making Alaina even more infuriated.
"You're still laughing?" she demanded. "Think of a solution."
Silas reined in his amusement. As he spoke, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her back toward the mansion.
He immediately grabbed an ice pack from the fridge and applied it to her eyes.
Her emotions finally leveled out. She only carefully removed the ice pack when she heard the sound of Silas's footsteps heading upstairs.
From the moment she decided to make a clean break with Ethan, she had demanded of herself that she couldn't be cowardly, and certainly couldn't be a crying mess.
But she had forgotten that she was just a normal person.
Having poured her heart and soul into loving someone for so many years, she wasn't strong enough to truly sever all love and affection in a single second.
Crying it out like this really did make her feel much better.
The next second, Silas came downstairs, changed into fresh clothes.
Catching sight of him from the corner of her eye, she quickly slapped the ice pack back over her eyes.
Silas's eyes darkened as he walked over to her. "I have some business to attend to. I need to head out again."
She hummed in acknowledgment a couple of times, waving her hand frantically like a rattle drum. "Then hurry up and go. I'm fine now. You don't have to worry about me."
The corners of Silas's mouth lifted imperceptibly before he turned and walked out.
Hearing his footsteps fade away, she pulled off the ice pack and let out a long sigh of relief, as if she had just escaped a disaster.
...
For the next few days, she deliberately avoided Silas.
In the mornings, she went downstairs early to eat breakfast and drink her medicine, then went to wait for him in the car ahead of time.
The moment Silas got into the car, she leaned to the side and pretended to sleep.
