"Mr. Summers and Dr. Rossi believe in us, and we'll work hard," someone chimed in.
Alaina smiled. "Don't underestimate his tolerance." She gave Silas a bright, curved smile. "Right?"
Silas responded directly with action, downing the drink.
Alaina suppressed a smile, pouring him a third glass while picking up a juice for herself. "This third glass, I toast to you. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to use my skills."
Silas let out a low hum of acknowledgment, clinked glasses with her, and drained it once more.
As he set the glass down, his gaze landed squarely on Alaina's face. "You earned it."
The whole table discreetly observed the subtle tension between them, no one daring to interrupt.
"Then, as the team leader, I'm going to ask for one more reward for Project Aegis," Alaina said, looking at him. "If we finish the mission on time, I hope you'll grant us a long paid vacation and a bonus."
Silas nodded without a second thought.
The team felt like they were dreaming. After a smattering of hesitant applause, they realized he was serious and started clapping wildly.
"You heard him, guys. Let's give it our all," Alaina cheered, her eyes crinkling into crescents of pure joy.
Silas watched from the sidelines, an unconscious, faint smile touching his lips. His fingers trailed along the rim of the empty glass as the warmth of the alcohol spread through his veins.
The team laughed and cheered, the atmosphere more electric than a holiday party.
Silas stood quietly beside Alaina, his eyes lingering on her smiling profile, a trace of unrecognized softness pooling in his gaze.
Once the celebration ended, Silas stepped outside.
Drinking those three massive glasses so fast had painted a faint flush on his cheeks. As the breeze hit him, the buzz settled through his pores, yet his steps remained perfectly steady.
He stood by the hotel entrance waiting for Alaina, his eyes fixed on the elevators.
A moment later, Alaina emerged with her bag, chatting and laughing with her team before they all said their goodbyes and scattered.
