"I mind," Silas fired back instantly. His dark eyes locked onto her, his knuckles curling slightly. The turbulent emotions rolling off him were almost palpable, and an unrecognized tightness laced his voice. "As long as you're here, Aunt Rosemary can't pressure the General."
She nodded. "I'm heading out tomorrow. I need a car and a driver."
"For what?" he asked.
She put on a dismissive face, tossing out two simple words. "Personal business."
Silas didn't push. He just stared at her intensely for a long moment before turning and heading upstairs.
Alaina watched his retreating back, the tight knot in her chest finally loosening.
She had no idea if what she was doing was right.
But her instincts told her this was the only way to test the waters.
The next morning, Alaina deliberately dressed up before heading out.
From the second floor, Silas watched her practically skip away, a storm of undefinable emotions raging in his eyes.
Alaina arrived at the cafe she had agreed on with Michelle.
Michelle introduced Preston to her.
Preston was exactly as Michelle had described—he looked like a movie star and spoke with easy charm.
With Michelle keeping the energy up, Alaina and Preston actually ended up having a great conversation.
Suddenly, Michelle glanced toward the cafe entrance, a look of sheer panic washing over her face. She leaned in and whispered to Alaina, "Dr. Rossi, look."
Alaina followed her gaze and sure enough, saw Silas standing at the doorway in a sharp black overcoat.
His dark, brooding gaze swept across the room and collided perfectly with hers.
Alaina's heart skipped a beat, but she maintained a cool, composed exterior.
Some things, you just had to test to know for sure.
And now, she knew.
