"Or... are you secretly a seasoned player in the romance department, and you just haven't let anyone know?"
After she spoke, she stared at him unblinking.
The rich aroma of roasted coffee beans drifted through the cafe, thick enough to steep their locked gazes in an unspoken, competitive tension.
Alaina Rossi could hear her heart hammering in her chest, her fingertips burning with anticipation.
Silas Summers looked right back at her, his words clear and solemn. "Just because I haven't experienced it doesn't mean I don't know how."
"We already signed the marriage papers, so we're legally bound anyway. Adding a real romance to the mix fulfills your wish and eliminates the risks you'd face by finding an outsider."
"As a special reward just for you, I'm asking you to agree... let me personally be your partner in this."
With that, Silas's gaze darkened, brimming with absolute confidence.
Alaina pressed her lips together and nodded. "You make a fair point."
But a second later, she clarified, "If you can't handle the role, I'll replace you at a moment's notice."
The tension in Silas's jaw instantly vanished, replaced by a faint, warm smile spreading in his eyes.
"Effective immediately," Alaina said, standing up. "I'm free tomorrow. Right now, I need to head over to Professor Foster's house to check on him."
With that, she took the lead and walked toward the exit.
Silas stood up and followed her. "I'll drop you off."
His car was parked just a short distance from the cafe entrance. He opened the passenger door for her, waiting until Alaina was comfortably seated before walking around to the driver's side.
Alaina turned her head to watch the passing streets, unable to suppress the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. It slowly bloomed across her face as she discreetly fiddled with the hem of her shirt, the tips of her ears flushing a delicate pink.
The silence in the car was no longer suffocating or heavy; instead, a faint, indescribable sweetness lingered in the air.
When the car pulled up to the entrance of her professor's neighborhood, Alaina unbuckled her seatbelt to get out, but Silas suddenly caught her wrist. His thumb gently brushed against the smooth skin there, his voice low and coaxing. "I'll pick you up tonight."
Alaina looked back at him, her gaze crashing into his eyes that were now overflowing with amusement. "Is this... the start?"
