He wasn't waiting in the car like he normally did.
Standing by the door, he watched her walk out and stepped forward to meet her, naturally taking the heavy bag of pastries and fruit her professor had forced upon her.
He popped the trunk and carefully stowed the items away.
"Where's Morris?" Alaina asked.
Silas closed the trunk and said softly, "I wanted to drive here and pick you up myself."
Alaina hadn't quite adjusted to this new dynamic, freezing in place for a moment.
Right after, Silas pulled a canned beverage from his pocket and gently placed it into her hands.
The can was hot, the sudden warmth making Alaina's fingertips tremble.
She looked down at the heated drink in her hands, entirely unsure of what to say. "I... I don't think I can drink this," she murmured softly.
"It's just to keep your hands warm," Silas replied.
Alaina was stunned even further, the heat traveling slowly from her palms straight to her chest.
"Let's go home," Silas said gently, placing a hand on her shoulder as he guided her to the passenger side and opened the door.
The car merged smoothly onto the road, heading back to The Summers Estate on the hillside.
When they parked, Silas came around, took the now-lukewarm can from her hands, and intertwined his fingers with hers, tucking their joined hands into his coat pocket.
Feeling his warm, firm palm against her fingers, Alaina stiffened completely.
His large hand securely enveloped her slightly chilled fingers.
Mrs. Gable came out to greet them. Seeing the scene, she smiled warmly. "Welcome back, sir, madam."
"Mrs. Gable." Alaina felt a sudden rush of embarrassment and tried to pull her hand away.
"Don't move," Silas murmured low.
He led her all the way inside, hand in hand.
