Alaina never expected someone like her to panic, apologize, or beg for mercy anyway. She replied calmly, "There is no 'and.' I came to tell you that I know."
She kept staring, unflinching, until Lily finally looked a bit guilty, pulled out a checkbook, signed a check, and tossed it over.
Glancing at the check, Alaina let out a genuine laugh.
"Such a cheap payoff? Should I call you naive, or just ignorant, Lily?"
Lily smiled through gritted teeth. "Then say it. What exactly do you want?"
"You broke the law," Alaina said without holding back. "And breaking the law means facing legal consequences. You're a doctor, Lily. Was all that education completely wasted on you?"
Lily chuckled dismissively, standing up and stepping closer. "You say I broke the law, but do you have any proof? Did you forget the university lab was funded by Apex?
"Anything with your name on it was scrubbed a long time ago. Do you honestly think the Summers family would give you the chance to falsely accuse me and drag down the corporation and Apex with it?"
She leaned in, dropping her voice. "Have I never reminded you exactly who Silas Summers is? He is the Director of the Security Administration. Crushing someone like you would be as easy as stepping on an ant for him."
Alaina was no stranger to the name Silas Summers; in fact, it was burned into her memory.
Back in school, Lily's favorite threat was claiming Silas would have her expelled.
Since then, Alaina remembered perfectly well that Silas Summers was the very shield that allowed Lily to run rampant.
"Working for me is an honor. Do you understand?" Lily reached out and mockingly patted Alaina's cheek twice.
Alaina glared at her with clenched teeth, refusing to say a word.
"That's more like it," Lily smirked triumphantly. "Keep your mouth shut just like you used to, and don't try to play tough with me.
"As long as you behave, I might just be generous enough to let you into Apex as my assistant, so you can keep doing the research you love so much."
