Alaina spoke up, entirely earnest once more. "Thank you."
"I should be thanking you," Silas countered smoothly. "It's been a very long time since I actually took a vacation."
She could only imagine. The man was an unparalleled workaholic.
Turning her head, she suddenly noticed an illuminated canopy draped in flowing white sheer fabric set up further down the beach.
Beneath it sat a rustic wooden table draped in a checkered cloth, completely adorned with flickering candles and crystal champagne flutes. The warm, amber glow swayed gently with the ocean breeze, creating an intoxicatingly romantic scene.
Alaina blinked in surprise before turning back to him, shaking her head. "Does Mr. Summers always pull out this many surprises?"
Squeezing her hand, Silas laughed and led her over. Pouring them both a glass, he handed her a flute and raised his own. "Happy New Year, Dr. Rossi."
The delicate clink of crystal mingled with the crashing surf. Taking a sip of the sweet wine, Alaina looked up, completely drowning in his tender gaze. A dizzying, euphoric warmth exploded in her chest.
A second later, Silas offered her his hand in a classic invitation to dance. "Do you remember how this goes?"
"You aren't worried I'll step on your toes?" she challenged with an arched brow.
He laughed, tipping his chin toward her. "You can trample me all you want."
Lifting her effortlessly by the waist, he set her atop the edge of the table and knelt down to slide off her shoes.
Smiling brightly, Alaina slipped her fingers into his waiting palm and hopped down, settling fluidly into his arms.
The salty breeze, laced with the faint aroma of champagne, fluttered through her hair. His scorching palm anchored to her waist, guiding her in a slow, rhythmic sway over the moonlit sand, perfectly timed to the roaring tide.
Following his smooth steps, she listened to the relentless, powerful beat of his heart echoing against her own. Even the wild ocean wind felt impossibly soft.
The moonlight spilled over their intertwined silhouettes as the waves continuously caressed the shore. The quiet, spellbinding romance of the moment saturated the breezy tropical night.
"Sigh," she suddenly breathed out.
