Silas and Alaina froze simultaneously, their heads snapping toward the voice.
Stella peered at them through half-open lids. "What are you... doing?"
Operating purely on panic, Alaina shoved Silas away and scrambled over to her sister. "What are you doing in here?"
"I wanted to sleep with you," Stella mumbled. "The nice lady at the front desk let me in, but you weren't here. I got tired waiting, so I fell asleep."
"Okay, okay, I understand," Alaina said, furiously trying to mask her burning humiliation as she tucked Stella back into the pillows. "Go back to sleep. I'll be out as soon as I take a shower."
Dropping his head, Silas let out a soft, resigned chuckle. Muttering a dry "Goodnight," he turned and headed up the stairs to the second-floor bedroom.
The following morning.
Stella was fully recharged, dragging Alaina with one hand and Silas with the other as she skipped into the dining room for breakfast.
The moment they sat down, Evelyn offered an apologetic grimace. "Stella crashed your room last night, didn't she? We tried to talk her out of it for hours, but she just wouldn't listen."
"It's fine. It's been forever since I got to sleep next to her," Alaina lied smoothly, patting her sister's cheek.
"Well, you absolutely cannot bother them again tonight," Arthur commanded sternly.
Stella nodded with grave understanding. "You're right. I totally ruined the mood. The second I woke up, they stopped kissing."
Complete, devastating silence fell over the table.
*Cough. Cough. Cough.*
Alaina choked violently on a mouthful of milk.
Silas patted her back gently, his eyes dancing with badly concealed amusement. Shooting Arthur and Evelyn a nonchalant glance, he calmly handed Alaina a napkin.
Clenching the napkin, Alaina furiously wiped her mouth. Her face was so hot she practically wanted to dive headfirst into her scrambled eggs.
Choking back a laugh, Evelyn hastily told Stella, "That's exactly right. You are a terrible third wheel."
