Tomorrow would be her first day back at work at The Security Administration. She sent a message to Silas, hoping to see him before she went to bed.
But Silas still hadn't replied.
Late at night.
She sat at the dining table on the first floor, working on her laptop while she waited.
Exhausted from working, she couldn't help resting her head on the table and dozing off.
An unknown amount of time passed before she felt a gentle weight on her shoulders, and a familiar scent instantly filled her senses.
She shot her head up, locking eyes with a tired gaze.
Silas was standing beside her, his fingertips lingering on the collar of her jacket. "Why are you sleeping out here? You'll catch a cold," he said, his voice raspy.
Alaina rubbed her eyes and immediately stood up to throw herself into his arms. Burying her face in the crook of his neck, she poured days of longing into the embrace. "You're finally back."
"I'm back," Silas said, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on the top of her head.
In the next second, he bent down and scooped her up into his arms.
Alaina instinctively looped her arms around his neck, pressing her cheek against his warm chest and listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.
Carrying her up to the second-floor bedroom, Silas laid her on the bed and tucked her in before naturally lying down beside her, turning on his side to look at her.
Alaina also turned on her side, her voice very soft. "Were you busy?"
Silas nodded. His eyes were bloodshot, harboring an exhaustion that couldn't be easily chased away.
"I saw all your messages," he explained. "But I didn't have time to reply."
"It's okay." Alaina reached out and gently touched the dark circles under his eyes. "Next time just send a quick emoji, just to let me know you're safe."
Silas nodded.
"Go freshen up and get some rest," she urged.
