She sat on the first floor to wait.
Before long, Lily came downstairs, purposefully sitting next to her and demanding, "Are you avoiding me on purpose?"
Alaina looked at her calmly.
When she had returned to The Summers Estate from Rossi County the other day, she had heard Rosemary mention that Lily hadn't been home a single day over the holidays.
So she asked, "I heard you weren't at The Summers Estate for the entire break. You were with Ethan, weren't you?"
Lily crossed her arms, sneering. "Why should I answer you? My whereabouts are none of your business."
Alaina offered a faint smile. "Don't get so worked up. I was just asking casually; if you don't want to talk about it, that's fine." With that, she moved to get up, but Lily threw out a hand to stop her.
Lily leaned in, her tone dripping with an inexplicable smugness. "I know what you're thinking. You're trying to use me to find out how Ethan is doing."
"You know perfectly well that his mother's death must have hit him hard. You're looking for an opportunity to rub salt in his wounds."
"But with me by his side, you'll never get the chance. No matter what happens, he has me. He's going to be absolutely fine."
Alaina frowned, remaining silent.
Hearing Lily say that, she actually felt a sense of relief.
Lily stared directly at her. "Ethan proposed to me. But since he's in mourning, we're just going to hold a simple engagement ceremony first."
With a triumphant lift of her chin, her tone was filled with undisguised flaunting.
Alaina paused briefly, her gaze completely unruffled. "Congratulations. Lovers finally united."
