Lily turned around, leveling a pitying glare at her.
"I don't know what kind of deal you struck with Silas, but I highly advise you not to get too invested."
"Silas is far too pragmatic. He can turn his emotions on and off like a switch, and he'll never hand his heart over to anyone."
"To him, you're just useful and offer a bit of novelty in his life."
"Once the thrill fades, you'll be nothing."
Alaina stood rooted to the spot, her fingers subconsciously pinching the fabric of her skirt, yet her face showed no trace of panic. Instead, her lips curved into a faint smile.
She offered just a single response. "Silas actually cares about you far more than you realize."
At that, Lily let out a scoff, as if she had just heard the most ridiculous joke.
Alaina knew exactly what she was thinking, but she was too tired to argue.
Gratitude and forgiveness were not virtues everyone possessed.
"Happy engagement," she said coolly, turning on her heel and walking out.
She was heading back to the room she had been in earlier when Ethan suddenly blocked her path.
Ethan wasn't dressed in formal attire, staring at her with deadened eyes.
Before she could say a word, Ethan suddenly whipped out a handkerchief and clamped it over her nose and mouth.
The sudden suffocating wave of despair instantly seized Alaina's throat. She instinctively shoved at him, but all the strength rapidly drained from her limbs. Through her fading consciousness, Ethan's low voice drifted into her ear: "Alaina, don't be scared. I won't hurt you."
...
Lily dialed Ethan's number again, but still got no answer.
Her bridesmaids knocked and came in. "Lily, are you ready?"
"I can't reach Ethan," she complained.
"Ethan's here," one of the bridesmaids laughed. "We saw him heading upstairs a minute ago."
