"I just... I just needed to get you alone," Ethan confessed, his throat tightening. His knuckles turned white from how hard he gripped her hands. "I know I've missed my chance. I know I drove you away with my own two hands. But I can't live the rest of my life with this regret. I have so much I need to tell you."
"All those misunderstandings between us... and how you saved me in the mountains back then—I've figured it all out."
"I'm so sorry, Alaina. I finally realize how wrong I was, and I was so horribly blind. I broke things off with Lily today. I cut ties with her completely. I swear, I will never let anyone make you suffer again."
Alaina looked at him calmly and gently squeezed his hand back. "Ethan, it's all in the past," she said earnestly. "I stopped blaming you a long time ago. You need to let this go. Saving your life was just a coincidence. Even if it had been a complete stranger, I still would have done the exact same thing."
His chest heaved violently, his eyes flooding with a desperate red. "If you don't blame me anymore... then do you still love me?"
Alaina tilted her head slightly, studying his broken expression. "I... did love you... once. You were the most beautiful part of my youth. But Ethan, we can't live in the past..."
"Don't say it. Please, don't say it," Ethan interrupted her, his composure shattering. His trembling fingers pressed against the red corners of his eyes. He looked like a fragile piece of glass on the verge of breaking into a million pieces, his voice violently trembling.
He couldn't bear to hear her final answer. He knew he had no right to ask her to turn back time, but that pitiful sliver of hope in his heart refused to die. He was terrified that if she actually said the words out loud, his very last lifeline would be crushed into dust.
He clutched the edge of Alaina's shirt, burying his forehead against her knees like a lost child who couldn't find his way home. Suppressed sobs slowly escaped his chest. "I know you truly loved me, and I know I ruined everything. I know I don't deserve you, but please, can you just give me one more chance? Let's leave this place. Let's run away to somewhere no one knows us and start over. I'll treat you so well. I'll spend the rest of my life making up for everything I owe you."
