Hearing this, Alaina couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry. The feeling of being caught red-handed, unable to clear her name, was purely maddening.
She wanted to argue back, but realized she had absolutely no ground to stand on.
"I think I'll just go to sleep," she said, plastering on a painfully fake smile as she lay down.
Silas lowered his eyes to hide a soft smile, stood up, and headed into the dressing room.
The next morning.
Silas received an emergency call and had to leave the house before her.
Alaina had already planned to take the initiative and greet Silas's mother before heading to work, so she left her room immediately after breakfast.
She found Mrs. Gable and explained her intention.
Mrs. Gable led the way.
Knocking first, Mrs. Gable stepped inside and kindly asked Valerie Summers, who was sitting by the window, "You only had a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. Would you like anything else?"
Valerie shook her head, her gaze shifting to Alaina standing near the doorway. Her voice carried absolutely no emotion as she spoke, "So, this is Mrs. Summers?"
"Hello. I'm Alaina," she greeted politely.
Taking the empty bowl, Mrs. Gable tactfully excused herself and softly clicked the door shut.
Valerie raised a hand, gesturing for Alaina to sit in the chair opposite her.
Alaina sat down, and the two women quietly evaluated each other for a long moment.
She hadn't gotten a clear look at her the day before, but sitting face-to-face, she realized Silas had inherited his striking, superior features directly from this woman.
Valerie possessed an aloof, untouchable aura, her gaze utterly still and tranquil.
