"You must think I'm being incredibly heartless," Rosemary began, her tone heavy with sorrow. "The truth is, we used to be such a wonderful family. When Silas's father was still alive, his mother and I were as close as actual sisters. But after his father died, everything shattered."
Rosemary went on to explain that after his passing, Valerie was utterly consumed by the unbearable agony of losing her soulmate.
After several failed attempts to end her own life to be with him, she severed all ties with the family and retreated to an isolated commune.
Silas was so young back then. Having just lost his father, he suddenly lost his mother too.
The loving, warm home he had known vanished overnight. He cried for his mother every single day, until eventually, he ran away from home.
Armed with nothing but the name of the sanctuary, he somehow managed to find her.
"He was just a little boy. I still can't fathom how he survived such a grueling journey," Rosemary said, her eyes welling with tears. "By the time we tracked him down, he was covered in bruises. We later learned he had run into some terrible people along the way and had resorted to digging through trash cans just to eat."
"When we arrived, the monks told us he had already been there for two days. Since his mother refused to see him, he just stood outside and waited."
"It was pouring rain that day. His mother finally agreed to see him. But when he walked out of those gates, he didn't shed a single tear. He just looked at me and said, 'Aunt Rosemary, I don't have a mother anymore. Let's go home.'"
At this, the tears finally spilled over Rosemary's cheeks.
Alaina's heart seized violently, a hot, agonizing sting pricking at her eyes.
She could so vividly picture that tiny, helpless boy standing in the pouring rain, clinging to the very last shred of hope.
