Her mind was completely consumed by the devastating story Aunt Rosemary had just told her.
The image of that little boy standing in the freezing rain, quietly accepting he had no mother left, seamlessly overlapped with the image of the deeply reliable, protective man he was today. A suffocating wave of despair crashed over her, bringing a painful sting to her nose.
Knowing full well she wouldn't be able to focus on work today, she sent Michelle Davis a message requesting the day off.
After delegating her duties in the group chat, she told Morris he didn't need to drive her and headed out into the city alone.
The early spring air still carried a biting chill, but the rare, bright sunlight was enough to chase away the cold lingering in her heart.
She strolled slowly down the sidewalk and eventually found herself at a library she hadn't visited in ages.
Back in her university days, this had been her absolute favorite sanctuary.
The moment she buried herself in a book, all her real-world anxieties simply melted away.
She found a cozy armchair by the window, pulled a collection of essays from a nearby shelf, and lazily flipped through the pages.
An indiscriminate amount of time had passed when she felt someone take the empty seat beside her.
The familiar, comforting scent of cedarwood mixed with sunlight drifted over her. Without even looking up, Alaina smiled softly.
"Didn't you have an emergency to handle?" she asked quietly, her eyes still glued to the page.
"The mission is handled. I saw your time-off request," Silas replied smoothly. "Figured I'd do a surprise inspection to see if someone was just slacking off."
Alaina turned her head, her gaze locking with his as she offered a smug smile. "It's only slacking off if you didn't approve it. And I saw the notification that my time-off was officially granted."
The corners of Silas's lips twitched upward as he adjusted his glasses. "A tactical error on my part. I approved it without demanding a bribe first."
Shutting her book, Alaina rested her chin on her hand and tilted her head to look at him. "Since you came all this way to find me, there will definitely be a reward."
Silas stared back, the depths of his dark eyes shimmering with pure amusement.
Leaning in closer, Alaina shielded her mouth with her book and whispered playfully, "A library date... perfectly suited for a man of your advanced age."
