"Number one: Not doing what they truly wanted with their lives. Number two: Spending too much time working. Number three: Never truly living for themselves. Number four: Not traveling to the places they dreamed of. And number five: Never experiencing an unforgettable romance."
Alaina listed them off, a profound look of gratitude washing over her features. "Looking at that list, I feel so unbelievably lucky. Look at me—I got divorced and finally started living for myself. I'm spearheading the exact research I love. I went on a beautiful vacation with my family. And right now... I'm deeply in love with the most incredible man in the world."
Her unabashed honesty sent a violent tremor straight through Silas's chest, taking his usually guarded heart and submerging it in a pool of overwhelming warmth.
He turned to look at the radiant woman beside him. The midday sun caught the ends of her hair, and the bright, uncontained joy in her smile carried a blazing heat that scorched its way straight to the deepest corners of his soul.
Slowing his pace, he lifted a hand to brush a windblown strand of hair behind her ear. His thumb lingered on the warm shell of her ear as his voice dropped to a husky, raw whisper. "Are you glad you signed that contract with me?"
She paused her steps, her eyes sparkling like shattered stars. "More than glad..."
She met his intense, piercing gaze, hesitating for a split second before finishing with absolute conviction, "I hit the ultimate jackpot."
The wind carried the sweet aroma of the candied pecans between them. Silas smiled, wrapping his large hand completely around hers. The heat from his palm enveloped her cool fingers as he led her forward.
As they stopped at a crosswalk to wait for the light, he suddenly spoke up, his voice light enough to get lost in the breeze. "We actually missed a clause in that contract. It should have stated that if both parties are satisfied, they have the priority right to renew."
Alaina laughed out loud and gave his hand a squeeze. "Alright, deal! Assuming I'm still alive, of course. Verbal agreements are legally binding, you know. Don't go back on your word."
The light turned green. The chaotic storm of emotions that usually plagued Silas's eyes had settled into an endless, tender ocean. Making no attempt to hide his soaring joy, he smiled and slowly led her across the street.
The sun stretched their shadows long across the pavement, the two silhouettes overlapping so completely there wasn't a sliver of space between them.
"Alaina."
"Hmm?"
"Your last trip was with your family. How about we plan a vacation just for the two of us? We could leave right now, no itinerary."
"No way. We can't just drop everything and leave. The research project is at a critical stage, I couldn't possibly..."
