Rosemary Rowe's face darkened. "Silas, you are the head of this family. She gave birth to you, after all. Whether she gets to stay in this house is entirely up to you."
Silas unconsciously traced the back of Alaina's hand with his fingertips. He looked up at his mother, his voice flat. "Why did you come back?"
Valerie's fingers paused. She met his gaze calmly. "When I left, I couldn't get past my own trauma. I didn't abandon you on purpose. I asked myself back then if I had the capacity to raise you, and the answer was no. Rather than letting you see me in pain every day and dragging you down with me, I thought it was better to leave."
The fingers clutching her prayer beads tightened slightly. "For so many years, I prayed for you every single day at the sanctuary. I know I failed you, and I've never dared to ask for your forgiveness."
"My spiritual guide told me that despite my years of seclusion, my earthly ties were still unresolved. No amount of meditation could bring me peace."
"So I chose to leave the sanctuary and return to the real world to face my own heart."
"Truthfully, I don't even know what I want yet."
"Perhaps I'll only figure it out after some time."
Silas listened without a flicker of emotion.
Rosemary let out an incredulous, ice-cold scoff. "Are you saying... after thirty years, you suddenly waltz back in here, disrupting our peace, entirely for your own selfish reasons? You must have lost your mind at that retreat."
Valerie looked at the profound distance in Silas's eyes. "All I ask for is a small corner to stay and simple meals. I promise to keep entirely to myself and not interfere with anyone's life. Once I figure things out, I'll leave."
Silas remained silent for a long time, his grip on Alaina's hand never loosening. Finally, he spoke mildly. "If you want to stay, then stay."
The moment the words left his mouth, the entire living room fell dead silent.
Rosemary wanted to argue but forced herself to bite her tongue.
Valerie's hand trembled. A faint layer of moisture filled her eyes as she whispered a quiet thank you.
