A flurry of generic birthday notifications flooded her screen, along with a calendar reminder.
*Celebrate birthday with Ethan.*
She felt surprisingly at peace. Not caring anymore was incredibly liberating.
A text from Evelyn Rossi, sent just after midnight, caught her eye.
*Happy birthday, sweetheart! If you aren't too busy, could you come home for dinner tonight? Your dad is too stubborn to ask, but your sister and I miss you so much.*
Alaina's mother had passed away when she was young, and her father had raised her alone until he eventually married Evelyn.
Her nine-year-old half-sister was an absolute joy.
Her eyes prickled with tears. *Thank you, Evelyn,* she typed back. *I'm swamped today and won't be able to make it. Please give Dad a hug for me.*
Just as she set the phone down, the door swung open. Logan strode in, holding a small cake with a single candle, butchering the 'Happy Birthday' song at the top of his lungs.
Logan was notoriously tone-deaf and usually swore he wouldn't sing even if someone held a gun to his head.
Alaina crossed her arms, biting her lip to keep from laughing.
Logan presented the cake with a flourish. "Make a wish."
She closed her eyes, clasped her hands together, and blew out the candle.
"Happy birthday," Logan beamed, treating her like a little kid. "Once you recover from the surgery, I'll buy you a massive cake."
Alaina nodded with a smile, noticing Professor Foster leaning proudly against the doorframe.
After a brief chat with her mentor, a nurse arrived to prep her for the operating room.
Just as she reached the surgical ward doors, her phone buzzed. It was a nurse from the neurosurgery department at another hospital.
Years ago, when Ethan had been left paralyzed, the board of directors had nearly ousted him from Harrington Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Harrington had fought tooth and nail to keep his position, promising he would fully recover within three years.
