Logan let out a disdainful scoff. "Not for much longer."
At that moment, Alaina walked over. "Who is it?"
Logan mouthed the word *Asshole* and handed her the phone.
"What do you want?" Alaina asked smoothly.
"Don't flatter yourself, Alaina," Ethan snapped, his tone dripping with venom. "We aren't even divorced yet, and you've already lined up a rebound?"
Alaina remained entirely expressionless. "That is none of your business."
"You are still my wife. How is it not my business? Where are you? What exactly are you doing? I'm coming over right now," Ethan demanded, barely suppressing his rage.
Alaina glanced up at the illuminated *Operating Room* sign a few feet away. "It's my birthday today. I'm just getting ready to celebrate."
The line went dead silent.
She let out a bitter laugh. "Tell me, Ethan, if a woman isn't even worth celebrating a birthday with, did you ever really see her as your wife?"
Ethan's volume dropped significantly. "Alaina, some things take priority. We have the rest of our lives together. There will be countless birthdays to celebrate."
Alaina actually laughed out loud.
Spend the rest of her life swallowing her pride for him? The thought was terrifying.
Knowing exactly what his answer would be, she decided to test him anyway. "A lifetime is too far away, Ethan. I only care about right now. If you really don't want a divorce, drop everything and come to me right this second. Maybe I'll reconsider."
Ethan said nothing.
For the first time, Alaina truly understood the concept of a deafening silence. She smiled, exhaling the heavy tension in her chest. "I'm kidding. You probably called for your medical records. They're on the second shelf of the bookcase in the study."
"Alaina, just listen to me—"
"Save it. Let's just go our separate ways," she cut him off coldly. "If we drag this out, it's going to get ugly. If you ever felt an ounce of gratitude toward me, please just sign the divorce papers."
She hung up and shoved the phone back into Logan's hands. "If he calls back, tell him whatever you want."
