The campsite suddenly settled into a different kind of tranquility.
Alaina and Julian laughed out loud in unison.
Silas served Julian another bowl of soup. "Fuel up on this. You'll need the brainpower to deal with everything when you get back."
Julian didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Silas, isn't this the kind of problem you're supposed to solve for me?"
"It's not time for me to step in yet," Silas replied evenly. "I promised to guarantee your freedom to marry who you want. That doesn't include shielding you from the nagging and emotional pressure you have to face on your own."
Hearing this, Julian was rendered speechless. He turned to Alaina. "If you ever want to know any juicy secrets about Silas, just ask me."
Alaina's eyes lit up.
Silas didn't even bat an eyelid. He slowly set down his soup bowl, his voice low but carrying an unquestionable warning. "Julian."
Julian chuckled. "Just a joke. Don't be so tense."
Alaina couldn't help but smile, lowering her head to blow on her soup, a soft gleam dancing in her eyes.
A moment later, Julian turned serious as he spoke to Silas. "I talked to Lily. She doesn't want to go to Switzerland. Even though Zion Systems is incredibly prestigious, she has absolutely no desire to go."
Silas's expression darkened at the news. He remained silent for a long time.
Then his phone rang. Silas answered it and stepped aside.
Alaina asked, "How is Lily's recovery going?"
Julian shook his head. "Her physical recovery is secondary at this point. Mentally, she's struggling a lot. But don't worry too much. I'll encourage her to pull herself together and take her to see a therapist."
Alaina nodded. "Right now, you're probably the only person she's willing to see and talk to."
Julian glanced over at Silas. "She needs to get away from all this heartbreak to properly heal. It's a shame that Silas's efforts went to waste after he went through so much trouble to contact that company in Switzerland."
Alaina looked at Silas's back, realizing that no matter how harsh his words could be, he still had a soft spot for his family.
