For a moment, Alaina couldn't find the words to describe how she felt.
There was someone in this world who had remembered her all this time.
Her mind flashed back to the way Silas had looked at her every time they met after their reunion.
Now she finally understood. Those complicated looks—sometimes resembling disappointment, sometimes resembling anger—were actually overflowing with deep affection.
"So... I did disappoint you," she said, seeking confirmation.
Silas shook his head. "It was regret."
"I had seen you when you were so full of strength and hope."
"So I couldn't help but wonder, if I had stepped forward and gotten to know you back then, could I have saved you from taking the hard road?"
"And sometimes I couldn't help but wonder, if I had just kept you safe and protected, could I have kept you from getting hurt?"
"I had the power to protect you, yet I stood by and did nothing."
Alaina's eyelashes fluttered. A lump formed in her throat, and she was momentarily robbed of her voice.
She felt like she had missed out on so much, yet at the same time, she was learning this at exactly the right moment.
After all, if they hadn't gone through all these trials together...
She never would have believed that Silas held such pure, sincere affection for her.
"Thank you for telling me your secret," she whispered.
Silas didn't say anything. He simply took her hand again, lacing his fingers through hers. The warmth radiating from their joined palms acted as a steady, silent promise.
"I'm so used to shutting myself away in my own world," he said, his tone calm yet resolute. "Your appearance brought sunlight and fragrance into it."
Alaina looked up at him.
His eyes were as deep as the ocean, completely devoid of the restrained distance he used to keep. Instead, they were completely open, holding nothing but an absolute, unreserved reflection of her.
Silas smiled faintly. "Turns out, saying your secrets out loud isn't so bad after all."
Alaina's nose stung, and her eyes quickly rimmed with red.
