"I'm fine," Silas quickly reassured her, though his hand clamped instinctively over his chest.
Alaina instinctively pressed her palm against his neck and forehead. The scorching heat radiating from his skin made her heart drop. It was far beyond a normal temperature, scalding to the touch.
The hot spring was pleasantly warm, but the fever burning through him was undeniable and jarring against the cool mist.
"You're burning up!" Alaina panicked. All the lingering romance evaporated in an instant, leaving behind sheer terror.
Silas forced down the stabbing pain in his chest and the crushing lethargy, reluctantly loosening his grip on her. His voice was hoarse and weak, yet he still tried to comfort her. "It's nothing. Just a minor bug."
Seeing his suddenly pallid complexion and furrowed brow, her heart ached terribly. She quickly grabbed his arm, carefully guiding him out of the pool.
Snatching a clean towel from the side, she wrapped him up tightly, handling him with extreme care so the chill wouldn't hit him.
"It must be the jet lag, combined with the wedding prep. You need to rest. Stop pushing yourself," she scolded, though her eyes were brimming with worry.
Too drained to argue, Silas let her support his weight as he slowly made his way back to the plush bed and lay down.
The heavily charged intimacy of the cave had completely dissolved, replaced by a tense, agonizing quiet fueled by her heartbreak.
She turned to go fetch Lucas, but Silas stopped her.
He insisted he knew his own limits and that he just needed a night's sleep.
Reluctantly, Alaina dropped the idea for now.
The steam continued to rise and the lamps cast their soft glow, but it couldn't thaw the sudden ice in Alaina's veins.
