The warm yellow light flooded her vision; she was still in the serene hot spring cave.
The man beside her was sleeping soundly, his breathing heavy but steady.
She lunged over him, her trembling fingers frantically tracing his cheeks and neck. When she felt the warmth of his living pulse, the crushing tension snapped, and tears immediately welled in her eyes.
It was just a dream.
But the bone-deep terror and despair were permanently branded onto her soul.
She curled into him, pressing against his warm chest. Listening to the steady thud of his heartbeat, she quietly shed a few tears of lingering dread.
It wasn't until dawn broke that her tears finally stopped, though the knot of anxiety in her chest remained.
Morning arrived with a thin layer of mountain mist, the early light filtering through the vines at the cave entrance.
Silas's fever had finally broken. Though he was still lethargic and weak, he was fully lucid.
Opening his eyes, the first thing he saw was her red rims and exhausted expression. His heart constricted. He reached up, thumbing her cheek. "I'm sorry for scaring you," he murmured guiltily.
Alaina shook her head, burying her face into his chest, her voice still rough from crying. "Let's go to the hospital. Please?"
She didn't mention the nightmare, channeling her terror into raw stubbornness.
Seeing the sheer panic she couldn't hide, Silas didn't have the heart to refuse. He gave her a gentle nod. "Alright. Whatever you want."
The two of them got up and left the sanctuary of the cave.
