Suppressing her rising emotions, Alaina turned to Arthur. "Dad, my mother-in-law just got out of the hospital and isn't feeling well. Let's get together another day."
Arthur playfully complained to Mrs. Harrington. "Look at this! It's only been a few years, and she's already acting like a true Harrington, always prioritizing your family first."
"We are just so lucky you raised such an incredible daughter for us," Mrs. Harrington laughed brightly.
"Aren't we supposed to be preparing dinner? I remember Lily absolutely loves roasted squab," old Mrs. Harrington interjected coldly.
She shifted her sharp gaze to Alaina. "Alaina, you roasted it once before, and it was much better than the chef's. Do us a favor and personally prepare a portion for Lily tonight so she can try it."
"That doesn't seem appropriate, Grandma," Lily declined with a hollow, plastic smile. "How could I possibly treat the young madam of the Harrington family like a common maid?"
Alaina bit the inside of her cheek. Just as she was about to retort, Arthur rolled up his sleeves and let out a hearty laugh. "Mrs. Harrington, speaking of roasted poultry, I brought some wild herbs with me. Stuffing those inside before roasting makes for an absolute masterpiece. Come on, let me show off my culinary skills for my in-laws."
Without waiting for permission, he loudly ordered the butler to lead him to the kitchen. No one could stop him.
Resigned, Alaina followed him to help out.
Arthur focused intensely at the stove. Only when the kitchen was completely empty did he lower his voice and ask, "Has your husband's leg fully recovered?"
Alaina hesitated for a split second before nodding, offering a soft "yeah."
"Now that he's recovered, you don't have to break your back taking care of him anymore. It's time you took proper care of yourself. Look at you—you're so thin now. You're even skinnier than when you were working yourself to the bone at that research lab," Arthur scolded, his voice thick with heartache.
Hearing those words, a sharp pang of sorrow hit Alaina's chest.
Back in the day, Arthur had struck it rich flipping real estate in the countryside, practically becoming an overnight millionaire.
He constantly nagged her about sacrificing her life for the research lab, claiming she had gone completely insane.
As fate would have it, he owned a plot of land that Harrington Enterprises had been eyeing for a long time.
