Ethan's face remained stony, but he offered a stiff nod.
Dinner time.
Old Mrs. Harrington insisted Lily stay and deliberately seated her right next to Ethan.
Ethan attended to Lily's every need with meticulous care, completely ignoring the fact that his actual wife was sitting directly across the table.
If a stranger had been in the room, they would absolutely assume he and Lily were a deeply devoted married couple.
Alaina cursed under her breath. Trying to reason with him was like playing the piano for a cow; she should have just kept her mouth shut and dragged her dad out of there.
"So beautiful," old Mrs. Harrington cooed at Lily, her eyes crinkling into two joyful slits. "You two truly are the perfect match."
"Grandma, you're speaking nonsense again," Lily feigned modesty, throwing a covert, mocking glance at Alaina.
"This old woman is perfectly lucid," old Mrs. Harrington replied without a shred of shame. "If God hadn't intentionally meddled, a crow could never match a swan."
Alaina knew the old matriarch despised her as a granddaughter-in-law. On a normal day, she would go out of her way to be extra cautious and desperately try to please her.
After Mrs. Harrington intervened a few times over the years, old Mrs. Harrington had at least managed to maintain a facade of civility.
But tonight, she wasn't even pretending anymore, publicly slapping Alaina's face right in front of her father.
Alaina's lips twitched. Keeping her father and Mrs. Harrington in mind, she balled her hands into fists and forced herself to endure it.
Sensing the suffocating awkwardness, Mrs. Harrington quickly jumped in to smooth things over. "Alaina truly is a blessing brought to us by the Harrington ancestors. I plan on keeping her by my side soon, to slowly introduce her to the family business and properly mentor her."
