Alaina Rossi could easily hear the dripping sarcasm in his voice.
"I'm leaving. I'll see you next time at the clerk's office," she said, rising from her seat with casual grace.
Ethan Harrington grabbed her wrist, demanding, "How can you act like nothing is happening?"
Alaina looked completely indifferent. "Does it hurt your ego that I'm not crying and begging you to stay?"
Ethan scoffed coldly. "What exactly did I do that is so unforgivable? You're being incredibly unfair to me."
Alaina stared at him with a chilly gaze, saying nothing.
"Say something. Don't just sit there pretending you've let it all go. Yell at me, fight with me, just make yourself clear," Ethan urged, standing up.
She slowly pushed his hand away, flashing a faint smile. "When I argued, you called me immature. When I fought, you called me unreasonable. Why are you so upset now that I'm doing neither?"
Ethan fell completely silent.
"Ethan," she said, meeting his eyes without blinking. "I was the one who insisted on marrying you in the first place, and you've been more than generous with the financial settlement. We don't owe each other anything."
Emotions churned in Ethan's eyes, and his voice trembled slightly. "Is that really how you feel?"
She nodded, her tone utterly devoid of warmth. "If you really want to know my one lingering grievance..."
"You knew you couldn't forget her, yet you still made me promises. You gave me hope only to crush it. You broke your word, and for that, you owe me an apology."
Ethan froze for a long moment. "Every promise I made to you was genuine."
"Alaina, we really don't have to end up like this."
He stressed every single syllable of those words.
Alaina pushed his hand away and offered a detached smile. "Your promises were real, but so was the pain you caused me. Since you don't think you did anything wrong, there's no need to apologize. It's better to just let each other go."
