Alaina returned his look with a tight smile. "Thank you for the offer, Mr. Rowe."
She reached out and pushed the hard drive back toward him. "I'll cover this coffee. Consider it repayment for the years Apex supported our university research lab."
"Apex is an industry giant. You don't lack people like me. I plan to work hard at Astra Technologies, so you don't need to worry about my career anymore."
Hearing this, Julian didn't push any further.
He simply stared intently at the woman sitting across from him.
She was petite, slender, and spoke in a soft, exceptionally polite tone.
Lost in a crowd, she would easily go unnoticed.
Yet in that very moment, she looked like a warrior, radiating an unyielding energy that burned as bright as the sun.
Feeling a sudden wave of sheer exhaustion wash over her body, Alaina stood up, said her goodbyes, and headed back to the Foster residence.
She had opted for holistic herbal treatments post-surgery, but the side effects were heavily taxing.
She curled up uncomfortably in bed, drenched in a cold sweat.
Logan Foster rushed home from work to take care of her, and she immediately forced herself to look perfectly energized.
To celebrate her getting one step closer to finalizing her divorce, Logan cooked dinner himself.
When Franklin Foster returned home, he shared some good news at the dining table.
Next Sunday, the Semiconductor Research Institute was hosting its thirtieth-anniversary gala, and they were awarding him the Lifetime Achievement Award in Education.
"This soup is easy on the stomach," Logan said, serving Alaina a bowl before turning to Franklin. "If they're giving you a lifetime achievement award, it means you're officially old. You should probably just file for retirement."
"I can still work, why would I retire?" Franklin replied with a laugh. "I'm not like those other old guys who want to stay home and babysit grandkids. I'd go crazy from the boredom."
Logan shot Alaina a look and muttered, "See that? First comes the pressure to get married, then comes the pressure to have kids. It never ends."
Alaina chuckled. Hearing her phone buzz, she picked it up to check the screen.
It was a message from the HR manager at Astra Technologies, regretfully informing her that they could not move forward with her employment.
