The air in the room seemed to instantly freeze over, but Alaina's ears burned with intense heat.
"I'm so sorry. I thought you were... You know what, I'll just do it myself," Alaina stammered clumsily, her hands frantically reaching behind her back to yank at the stubborn zipper.
Silas watched her pitiful struggle with a cold, detached gaze. Without saying a word, he stepped behind her. His long fingers deftly pinched the tiny metal zipper pull and smoothly slid it upward.
The sharp, metallic zip was deafening in the dead quiet of the room.
Alaina froze stiffly in place as his cool voice drifted over her shoulder.
"Do not underestimate me, and do not overestimate yourself."
She bit her lip. It felt like an insult, yet she lacked the energy or grounds to fire back.
Silas maintained his aura of absolute, emotionless indifference, which only made her feel like she was the one overreacting.
"I prefer peace and quiet, so there won't be maids lingering outside the door. We are partners. You are welcome to ask for my assistance freely. Helping you adjust to life at the estate is part of my obligation." Silas walked over to the vanity, picked up the emerald pendant necklace Great-Aunt Rosemary had gifted her, and returned to stand behind her.
"May I?" he asked in a low voice.
Alaina nodded, her spine snapping completely rigid as her heart hammered against her ribs.
Silas's movements were incredibly gentle. Holding the ends of the chain in both hands, he draped the necklace over her chest from behind, fully focused on securing the delicate clasp.
His warm breath brushed lightly against the nape of her neck, sending a cascade of electricity down her spine and completely short-circuiting her brain.
The second the clasp clicked shut, she darted away, quickly muttering, "Thank you, I'm ready," before marching out the door at top speed.
They walked into the dining room side by side.
Seeing her, Julian Rowe paused in surprise before breaking into a warm smile. He stood up to greet her, presenting a beautiful bouquet he had prepared in advance. "Congratulations."
