Alaina took a sharp breath, having no choice but to say, "It was my own choice."
"Forget it, I won't scold you. At least you didn't do worse than last time," Arthur sighed. He shot a glance at Silas. "Stay for dinner before you head back. I'll go check on the roast."
The moment Arthur left, Alaina marched up to Silas, her eyes flashing with irritation. "Who told you to come here? What exactly did you say to my dad?"
Silas met her gaze head-on. "You're putting on a performance for the Summers elders. There's no reason I should sit on the sidelines for your family."
"Showing up like this only makes things harder for me," Alaina fired back accusingly. "You can get married and divorced a hundred times and no one would dare breathe a word against you. But in a small town like this, my family is the one who has to deal with the endless gossip."
Silas didn't even flinch. "Then find an even better man next time, and turn their gossip into pure envy."
Alaina: "..."
She was so utterly speechless that all she could do was laugh. Every comeback she thought of felt entirely inadequate.
Just then, Stella poked her head around the corner. "Silas, Dad wants to know if you want to try his homemade whiskey?"
...
Night fell, wrapping the house in darkness.
A feast of incredible dishes was spread across the large dining table.
The four members of the Rossi family, along with Silas and Zachary, gathered around it.
Arthur raised his glass. "Let's welcome the newest member of the Rossi family. Welcome..."
He paused, looking at the man of the hour.
"Silas Summers," Silas supplied smoothly.
"Welcome, Silas. Welcome to our family. I'm finishing my glass, drink as much as you like," Arthur declared boldly, downing his harsh liquor in one gulp.
