“What, thinking about sparring with me?” Rebecca was never one to look up at anyone. She leaned comfortably back in her chair, her gaze flat. “With your size, you wouldn't stand a chance.”
She wasn’t wrong, but to Magee, it came off as a straight-up challenge.
“Rebecca, Magee was just curious, that's all. If you don't want to talk about it, just say so. No need to be mean,” Paulina chimed in as she walked over.
She had caught the entire drama on the school broadcast and already watched the videos from the admin building. What she really couldn’t wrap her head around was why Wade would go out of his way to cover for someone like Rebecca.
Paulina was already pissed. Now, with a chance to call Rebecca out, she wasn’t about to let it pass.
Rebecca stayed cool, one foot braced against the floor and her expression sharp with confidence. “This is just me. If you can't deal with it, then don’t come near me.”
She was just trying to eat. Why did these people have to pick now?
Paulina felt her jaw tighten. She was furious, but she still had to keep up her perfect image.
“Rebecca, I know you don’t want me meddling, but Dad and Mom asked me to look out for you. I promised them I would. I can’t just pretend nothing’s happening, right?”
Before Rebecca could answer, Paulina’s crowd jumped in.
“Some people just don’t know how to appreciate anything. It’s always someone else’s fault, even when they’re in the wrong.”
“Some people don’t know gratitude, even when it’s spelled out for them.”
Rebecca had had enough. She stood up, tall and effortlessly striking, her vibe all sharp edges.
She fixed them with a cool stare. “All of you, do it together. Saves time.”
The whole group, still grumbling a second ago, instantly fell silent. Their eyes darted to Magee, looking for backup.
Rebecca watched him too, waiting, eyes narrowed.
Magee barely reacted. Instead of getting mad, he just smiled.
“Not today. But I’d love a lesson from you sometime,” he said, looking genuinely amused.
But by the time Rebecca finished her meal, someone had already uploaded a video of the whole scene to the school intranet.
The reaction was instant. The whole school was buzzing. Some people, after actually seeing Rebecca's skills, switched from haters to at least neutral.
[No way Wade let a total newbie into Apex Academy for nothing. This girl is actually something.]
[Tell me about it. Those cafeteria tables are all stainless steel, bolted with four chairs. Most guys wouldn’t be able to budge one, but she kicked it across the floor like it was nothing.]
[I saw her fitness test records—crazy impressive. Guess I’m starting to see what Wade sees in her.]
[Her stamina is on another level. Even Neely would have to admit it.]
That last comment sparked a reaction from Neely’s fan crowd.
[Excuse you, Neely got into Vantage Point University by actually passing the exams. She competed nationally in fitness and placed! Rebecca could never.]
[Seriously, Neely is famous in the fitness world, and no one’s even heard of Rebecca.]
