Felice prided herself on her design skills. In her world, nobody else ever measured up, so it stunned her when a newbie like Rebecca actually dared to talk back.
Red-faced and fuming, Felice jabbed a finger in Rebecca’s direction.
“Rebecca, you’re just someone with a high school diploma. No matter how hard you try, you’ll never get anywhere. Where’s your confidence even coming from? Your trashy background or that empty head of yours?”
Rebecca knew genius often came with arrogance, but this whole “I’m better than you” act was way out of line.
“And what about you? What gives you the right to judge everyone? Is it your close-mindedness and tiny worldview?”
“You…”
Felice looked ready to snap, but Magee spoke up before she could get another word out.
“Felice, you’re being loud. Cut it out.”
Felice shrank instantly. “It’s not me. She’s being difficult on purpose.”
Magee’s expression cooled. “So my opinion doesn’t matter anymore?”
Felice clammed up, bitter and sulking, and slumped back in her seat. This wasn’t the first time today she’d been forced to back down.
Rebecca glanced at Magee, a little amused. If he didn’t give off the vibe of a walking glacier, she’d almost think he kept stepping in just to get her attention.
She looked around the classroom and finally realized—there was no seat for her. Not even a desk.
Magee seemed about to say something again, but Paulina quickly stood up first.
“Rebecca, do you want to sit with me for now? Once Lily sorts out your desk, you can move.”
Rebecca shook her head. “No, thanks. I’ll handle it.” She pulled out her phone, ready to make a call.
Paulina’s eyes darkened just a bit, barely noticeable.
“Rebecca, there’s no need to bother Wade over something so minor. Stuff like this makes it hard for you to really fit into the group, you know?”
Around them, the rest of the class stared. Rebecca’s pale skin and delicate features definitely turned heads, but as soon as anyone thought about her complicated connections and her habit of making mountains out of molehills, the sympathy stopped there.
