“Rebecca, don’t think you’re special just because Wade’s on your side. If you already got his permission to skip class, why didn’t you let me know right away? Do you even see me as your teacher? Since you clearly don’t respect me, I have no reason to keep you as my student. Get out. Don’t come back until I say you can.”
Rebecca watched Lily with an amused look, knowing she was just taking things out on her. She noticed the teacher’s arm, the one Rebecca had held earlier, was shaking. With a soft laugh, Rebecca asked, “Lily, have you been waking up at night with palpitations?”
Lily froze, her expression turning stiff. How did Rebecca know that?
Rebecca saw the doubt in Lily’s eyes, so she tapped her elbow and spoke in an easy, almost bored tone, “And does it ever hurt here?”
For some reason, Lily felt a strange chill in her gut.
A second later, her eyes widened.
How could this worthless girl know all that? Was it possible...
“It was you, wasn’t it?”
She’d never had these symptoms before, and her latest health check had come back perfect.
Rebecca had to be behind it.
Rebecca just smiled, lips curling up like she didn’t have a care in the world. “I can barely keep up with my own schoolwork. Do I really seem like someone with mysterious powers?”
Lily was seething. “If it wasn’t you, then who? What did you do to me?”
Rebecca just shrugged. “Lily, is your hearing getting worse? I already told you, I didn’t do anything.”
“You... Get out!” Lily was shaking, practically smoke coming from her ears. “Go stand outside. Don’t even think about coming back in unless I say so.”
None of the other students really got what was going on, but seeing Lily so upset made everyone keep their heads down and mouths shut.
Except Magee. Magee stared at Rebecca with this weird look, like he knew there was more to the story.
Paulina noticed his attention and, under the table, her hand curled into a fist. She couldn’t wait any longer. She had to find a way to get Rebecca out of Vantage Point University—now.
“Them? You got the Gates and the James families tied up together now?” she asked.
She remembered that the Gates family never thought much of the Jameses before, so they hadn’t been working together at all.
Odom was upfront about it. “Yeah. After we cut ties with the Gateses, I made sure they heard about our project with the Jameses. The idiot from the Gates family ran right over, hoping he could use the Jameses as a go-between. I already warned Jackson James though, so he isn’t going to help.”
Rebecca wasn’t so sure.
“Maybe. The marriage between the Gates and James families is basically settled. If Jackson doesn’t want to lose out on the Gates connection, he’ll probably change his mind. But that’s fine. It’ll be easier to take care of all of them at once.”
Odom laughed even louder. “That’s why you’re the mastermind.”
Rebecca rolled her eyes at his flattery. “I’m busy. Handle the rest yourself.”
She hung up and started walking again, but she stopped when she heard something rustling in the woods behind her.
